Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Webinar Digitalization of the water cycle and its optimization
Free access webinar proposed by ISA Sección Española on 17th of April at 16.30. The increase in population worldwide and the increase in civilization are affecting the natural water cycle. It must be taken into account that 97.5% of the water on Earth is salty. More than 99% of the remaining water is in underground reservoirs or in the form of ice. So less than 1% of fresh water is found in lakes, rivers and other available surface forms. On November 15, 2022, the world population reached 8 billion people and since the Industrial Revolution the growth has been exponential. Both industrialization and the increase in population mean that the cycle must be actively attended to with the inclusion of wastewater treatment plants, water treatment plants, desalination plants, etc. At the same time, we find ourselves in a situation in which global warming is directly affecting the water cycle, with changes in ocean currents, a decrease in precipitation or an increase in it, but in the form of increasingly powerful storms that cause floods, but little use of the precipitated water. All of this makes it necessary to implement solutions that control consumption, waste, water treatments, transportation and consumption, and much more. Webinar objectives 1. Digitization of the water cycle. 2. Optimized Automation. 2.1 IoT: giving value to data. 2.2 Remote Access, in any installation. 2.3 Use of Predictive Maintenance, data-based decision making.

Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 60 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 45 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINARWhat did you learn in the webinar? Did anything surprise you?
Ana Gonzalez 4/30/2024 12:41 AMthere are some many species closed to extinction. I started to read more about it and it is really shocking. Every day, 150 species may become extinct. There are approximately three disappearing per hour, resulting in 72 species to become extinct in a single day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Ana Gonzalez 4/30/2024 12:34 AMI´ve found the experience very interesting. raise awareness about how much waste you generate only in one day. even simple things like eating an orange, produce waste. true that is organic, but it is waste. Having a zero waste day is completely unrealistic but we all can effort to reduce it as much as possible. I will from now on. -

Ana Gonzalez 4/23/2024 12:03 AMI only miss Zero waste day as one-time action. Despite my commitment to be more sustainable, I don´t see the way to spend one full day without generating any waste. any suggestion or advise?-
Alexandra Sabau 4/23/2024 12:30 AMI also have selected this one time action. I actually plan to have this day sometime this week. As I have been also documenting myself on how to get the best out of it, I got to the 5Rs - Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot...so this is what I plan to do. :) hope it inspires you as well Ana -
Frank Scheuermann 4/23/2024 12:14 AMTo be honest, zero waste is unrealistic, but a reduction of 2/3 is a suitable and reachable target -
Ulrika Lindstrom 4/23/2024 12:14 AMI did not pick this action for the same reason. Perhaps I'm tunnel-visioned, so I look forward to hearing what others have to say on this to perhaps manage to squeeze this action in during the last week of Eco-challenge.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and MeWhat did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?
Ana Gonzalez 4/23/2024 12:01 AMThe food grown under regenerative practices contained more magnesium, calcium, potassium and zinc, more vitamins. I always buy from local producers as I come from a region where agriculture is the main activity.
My father was a farmer. He was part of regional farmers' network that they use to exchange best practice, learn from peers, build community and help each other's. Thanks to this, they have improved the way they work, making it much sustainable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and OceansWhat did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?
Ana Gonzalez 4/22/2024 11:08 AMI was surprised about the fact of 70% of fresh water is trapped in glaciers. I was not aware of such big percentage.-
Tünde Benő 4/22/2024 11:30 AMI just presented to a school and this is what they told, but I was shocked that 94% of the mammifers leaves to feed us.
