John's actions

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR

On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

The other day I posted about my visit to Singapore and one of my favorite places there (the Singapore Botanical Garden). I really enjoy running through the gardens and exploring new areas. After running there hundreds of times, this time I came across a boardwalk that I must have overlooked in the past. It was a quiet reprieve from the hustle and bustle and the shade dropped the temperature by 10 degrees. Amazing what you can find when you explore the world around you.

What a great way to end our Earth Month Ecochallenge than to spend a morning building a new insect habitat for the Baar office. One of our finished products is behind this passionate group, and we have another a bit more than 50% done. We're all curious to see how well received the new home will be for our local bees and insects.

It's been another amazing Earth Month with all of you! I was inspired by all of your posts and my individual learning was accelerated by learning through you. Keep going even beyond April.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Invest in Nature
What did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?

    John Nita's avatar
    John Nita 4/28/2024 4:58 AM
By making investments in companies or funds that have definitive ESG objectives, individual investors reward these companies for their proactive thinking and actions. Over time, the more each of us focus our investments in this way, other investments (or companies) will feel the need to progress ESG objectives if they too will secure similar rates of funding. This is truly an opportunity to put our money where our mouth is.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Beyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?

    John Nita's avatar
    John Nita 4/28/2024 4:44 AM
Of course, forests help prevent floods and erosion. But beyond, they provide climate control, create habitat for various species, give us a place to hike, camp, and relax. I find a walk in the forest gives me energy and helps my mental health.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

    John Nita's avatar
    John Nita 4/28/2024 4:39 AM
The majority of the store bought cleaning products have ingredients (if even in small amounts) that can in fact negatively affect the environment. DIY sustainable cleaning products are a safer alternative and really easy. Typically, they are based on white vinegar (acid) and sometimes based on baking soda (base). Make sure you label any spray bottles that you make up. We use similar bottles for watering some plants and it can be bad if you forget which is which.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Plastic in Clothing and Water
How did you try to catch the release of microplastics in your laundry? What did you learn in the process?

    John Nita's avatar
    John Nita 4/28/2024 4:34 AM
It never crossed my mind the amount of microfiber plastic that is entering wastewater treatment and then back into the oceans from my synthetic clothes. I bought the Guppyfriend microfiber laundry bag. Just like other laundry bags, just put synthetic clothes in the bag and then scrape out the small amount of microfibers that are released with each load.

Another beautiful weekend day, and the chance to get out for a nice hike in the mountains.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

    John Nita's avatar
    John Nita 4/27/2024 6:49 AM
My Round Rock, TX neighbors and I use an app called next door to ask to borrow things we need (typical one time use items for the garden). This has opened the door to not only avoid purchases that then just sit around for years and end up in landfill, but it has led to some really great friendships too. Sharing is Caring!

Great to be back on my bike today for a nice early morning ride. Central Switzerland weather is really gorgeous today!

And when I returned, it was nice to see my "neighbors" very active doing their thing.
