Ulrika's actions

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 15 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 15 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 15 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Endangered Species

Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 5 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 300 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR

On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Thank you team for this year's Ecochallenge, it was my first but will definitely not be my last! You've all been an inspiration and I'm happy to say I've learned a lot from all of you! Also a special thank you to Tunde for being such an encouraging captain! Including a picture of my happy place, the fireplace at our little summer cottage in Sweden.

It's a new week and the last couple of days of my first Ecochallenge. I've never considered myself an ecowarrior, and I've always felt overwhelmed when thinking of climate change, global warming, etc. What I've really appreciated with Ecochallenge is that it breaks it down into tangible actions and it encourages people to learn and to find their own why, which I think is fundamental for any real change to happen. I've learned from each one of my team mates and also from many others who have been engaged in this initiative and I'll definitely be here for it next year. Although more importantly, I'm hoping that I've been able to build some new habits I can carry with me.

What did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?

One thing that people might not know in general - that I actually learned from Sealegacy which I recommended earlier, follow them on Instagram - you'll learn a lot and you'll get to see amazing pictures is that mangroves are amazing at absorbing and storing CO2. Next time you plant a tree, consider making it a mangrove tree, and if you live so that you can't plant mangroves, consider donating towards such an initiative.

I found the first part especially fascinating, and it is mind-blowing that there is so much yet to discover about our planet and who lives here!

The suggested actions aligned very well with the Ecochallenge actions and the two that are closest to my heart are:
    - Practice responsible eco-tourism, and
    - Keep wildlife wild

If anyone has ever done a conservation focused volunteer trip I'd love to know more!

This is paradise for me! I can't wait until late summer / early fall when the forest is full of treasures! I also
can't wait to discover new places where I can combine the opportunity for reflection that only the tranquility and beauty of the forest offers with filling my freezer with berries and mushrooms to last through the year. In the picture you can see Cloudberries which are a local delicacy from the north of Sweden where I am from. They make delicious desserts and jam.

Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

    Ulrika Lindstrom's avatar
    Ulrika Lindstrom 4/24/2024 12:52 AM
With only a few days left of Ecochallenge I find that this is one of the topics I've been thinking about the most. What is really a "need"? Who can truly say they only buy things that they actually need? I don't think that I can, but I still believe that this has been a really good process for me and I consider it a success since having this as a daily goal has made me think twice about the purchases I make and it has indeed made me skip some. Hopefully this habit will stay with me long after Ecochallenge has ended!

Celebrated Earth Day with a lunch and learn in the office, thank you team for arranging this lunch and for the lovely bar soap. Many prefer liquid soap, and since bar soap is better for the environment I figured I'd share a tip on how to make your own liquid soap from bar soap - with the caveat that I haven't actually tried! If anyone has, let me know how it went!

That's interesting, Simona! I didn't know that. I've made the same reflection about hotels and bar soap, it's not very practical... For Earth Day we were gifted a nice travel box for bar soap which was great, this way if you prefer bar soap you can bring it with you, and if you happen to be in a hotel that uses bar soap you can use it as a "doggy bag" to bring the "leftovers" with you.

I keep using refills for my liquid soap and I realized it almost never crossed my mind that I can take it to the next level by going back to solid soap :-)) I think I am biased because on the other hand, solid soap in hotels drives me crazy. I spend 2 nights in a hotel and the only option is a small bar which will go to waste after having washed my hand a few times. I remember reading about an NGO recycling hotel bar soaps, I will have to check if more are doing this.

For those of you who were in the Food Waste lunch and learn the other day and are based in Switzerland - here is a really good Swiss version of the seasonal food calendar showing not only harvest time but also when local produce is available in shops - year round for certain products such as apples!

Fought my inner draffsack today and managed to get out for a brief walk despite rain, hail and thunder! Fresh air works miracles and I'm happy I did it despite the fact that it wasn't the most enjoyable weather. Fingers crossed that the sunshine returns soon and that all budding trees and plants survived today's storm!

Freshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Ulrika Lindstrom's avatar
    Ulrika Lindstrom 4/20/2024 12:26 AM
Another topic that turns out to be a bit of a djungle when you start looking into it. I am not a big consumer of seafood and eat mostly salmon and shrimp. The guides on the link were US focused but still contained some useful tips. I thought all tiger prawns were off limits but turned out some are ok. My key takeaway is to always look for the MSC or ASC marking, that way I can rely on work done by credible organizations and make smarter choices even though I don't know all the details.
