Edgardo V.'s actions
Land + Forests
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 5 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 5 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 5 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate + Air
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 10 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 15 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 15 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Climate + Air
Use Public Transit
Public transportation reduces pollution, improves community, and creates safe streets. I will use public transit 9 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Online Energy AuditWhere did you do an energy audit (work, home, school, other) and what did you learn?
Edgardo V. Chiari M. 4/30/2024 11:23 AMThis task and Zero Waste Day are the most difficult ones. I live in a flat in Madrid that I rent, so it's challenging to save energy in a place where the washing machine is over 10 years old, there are no dishwashers, so needs to be cleaned manually. The positive part is that I live alone, so there aren't many stuff to clean, and the idea is to group many things (clothes, plates, cookware, etc.). I've tried to convince my landlord to change the washing machine, but it's not possible. I check my energy and water bills and follow up to maintain and reduce consumption. Is the least I can do. -
Edgardo V. Chiari M. 4/30/2024 11:14 AMLast day of the Ecochallenge, but a starting point to maintain the information and ideas all shared during these days! Nice month, Team -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Edgardo V. Chiari M. 4/29/2024 9:15 AMOn the Mediterranean region we have a lot type of fishes and always when it's time to eat, we can find on the menu an option to eat fish. It´s true we must be aware of the contaminants like Mercury and PCBs. But we have other protein source to consider as a protein-rich foods, beans, legumes, nuts, tofu or lean meats. We need to diversify our diet and limit the consumption of high-risk fish and identify the other fishes with low contaminants so more easy to eat more frequently. -
Edgardo V. Chiari M. 4/29/2024 7:07 AMTomorrow will mark a complete month of using public transport, including buses, Metro and walking. That's quite an achievement! How has the experience been for you so far? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and PaperBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Edgardo V. Chiari M. 4/28/2024 6:26 AMThe benefits beyond carbon sequestration from the forest, we have a place to relax, walk through, hiking, camping, meditate; spend time in forest is linked to improved mental health, stress reduction, and overall well-being. Also you will see different biodiversity connect you more to nature. Forests are essential for cleaning the air and water, and for regulating the water cycle. In summer, nature has lower temperatures compared to the city, helping to regulate the climate by providing shade and reducing temperature. Nature offers a lot to all of us.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Edgardo V. Chiari M. 4/28/2024 6:05 AMThe Zero Waste Day was a challenge due the difficult to make decision concerning consumption and waste. May require significant effort to avoid single-use items, minimize packaging, and properly sort and dispose of waste.
I learned about my habits and behaviors.I became more aware of the amount of waste I typically generate and the areas where I could reduce it. Jut a small change on my daily routine, such I did yesterday to bring a second "life" to some items that can be reuse, or avoid the unnecessary packing can be good first step.-
Ana Gonzalez 4/30/2024 12:36 AMgood point about reuse Ed! -
Alexandra Sabau 4/28/2024 11:45 AMThis is a challenge that I also want to do tomorrow. Good tips.

Edgardo V. Chiari M. 4/27/2024 7:50 AMToday, on a raining and sunny day at Madrid, I think we, EMERSON, must be proud of the ongoing results and the commitment of all the colleagues across different world areas. Giving a portion of his happiness, sharing the goals, encouraging other competitors/friends and a the end doing our effort for the environmental sustainability. Go Boldly! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Personal Waste AuditWhat are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?
Edgardo V. Chiari M. 4/27/2024 7:41 AMThe result of the waste audit is that we can identify the packaging materials, paper, plastics are the major quantity of waste I have, food waste not apply in my case. We can reduce recycling, using reusable products: plastic bag , clothes, shopping bags, water bottles. Use the containers and recycle station. Educating the next generation raising the awareness about the importance of waste reduction and provide guidance on best practices.-
Ulrika Lindstrom 4/27/2024 10:28 AMIt's really good, and for me it makes it easier, if I focus on what I can do instead of how difficult things are and all the things I feel are impossible. These are some good, hands-on suggestions. A little goes a long way if we all do it!
