COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 25 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 25
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sun is shining the weather is sweet, taking the opportunity for the last day of the Eco Challenge to get outside and move my feet. Another 5k complete!
Lots of learning during this month and I have made some changes and commitments that will stick for sure. Planted a bee & butterfly friendly tree called a bottlebrush and started our veg garden patch project with my children.
Its also been great connecting with other team members during the month. What did you take away from this challenge that you have adopted as a new behaviour or habit ?
Thank you Earth Month Ecochallenge 2024 its been a blast!

Taking advantage of the warmer weather, racked up some time in the garden today with my youngest son. He wants to be a Chef when he is older, took the opportunity to learn how to grow our own herbs. Planting basil, chives, parsley, thyne and viola's. All herbs he recently used in a secret seasoning he created for his tasty chicken.
This is the start of a summer project inspired by the Ecochallenge, my goal is to build our very own vegetable patch while teaching my kids to plant and grow their own food. Here's hoping for a good UK summer!

I like how you are creating valuable moments for you and your children. Your son will get to experience the whole process and see the rewards of cooking with herbs that he grew himself. Gardening is very rewarding.

Donated my old hybrid bike to a local up-cycling charity (no pun intended). A local chap invests his time fixing up old bikes and selling them in the local community. 100% of the money raised goes to Cure Leukaemia | The Blood Cancer Charity. This scheme has raised £350k so far. An old bike getting a new lease of life and avoiding a landfill is a win for planet with the added bonus of supporting a great charitable cause!

Where did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?

I was surprise to learn many brands of chewing gum contains plastic. I didn't realise it's considered a single-use plastic!
In the UK alone, some 100,000 tons of it is chewed every year, and 95% of the country’s streets are stained with it.
Some of the plastics that can be found in regular gum:
Ill be looking out for Eco gum. Chew plants not plastic!

Given the important part Bees play in our biodiversity, I am heading to the local garden centre this weekend to pick up some native plants for my garden. Will be looking for some wildflower Beebombs to scatter on the local green behind my house.
