Elise's actions

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

ONE-TIME ACTION

I would like to share my cute story of my small child (6yo). For this challenge, my children have participated with me; we pick up trash, we volunteer, we planted a tree and many flowers. My son came home from kindergarten and pulled a wrapper out of his pocket and handed it to me. He told me his class took a walk today and he found a piece of trash that he picked up. With no trashcan near, he kept the wrapper in his pocket until he located a place to dispose of it, hours later. Luckily it was just a small candy wrapper, but this challenge has certainly changed the mindset of my entire family.

The small city I live in just posted an opportunity to have a tree planted in your yard. I thought this was a great opportunity and didn't know if anyone else had anything similar. We know that trees are so detrimental to our earth.

Today, I picked up 2 large barrels after work that another person was getting rid of. They were originally purchased as a wedding prop. This weekend I will work to repurpose them into rain barrels that will collect water from my roof/gutters. I will use the rainwater to water my garden and flowers. Picture is an example:

My Dogwood is stunning this time of year, my favorite part is to stand under it and soak in all the beauty as you look up. Between my new crabapple and my Dogwood, the pollinators are quite happy in my backyard. I have a ruby-throated hummingbird that comes back every late spring and adores this tree. I have always enjoyed trees ever since I had to do a "Leaf Collection" in grade school.

If only the blooms lasted until the end of summer...... the bees are loving it already (planted 4/6)

Today I did many little odds: planted perennials in my back yard, made our birdhouse gourds that we grew last summer and dried out all year into birdhouses and donated 10 to our community park. Walked some trails and carried a bag with me to pick up trash, and my favorite project was putting up a clothesline! My grandma and mom have always hung their clothes out to dry and it's another way to conserve energy.

Today several women got together for a group effort park cleanup day. I was able to use community service hours offered by my employer and it allowed me the time to clean up 2 different community parks for a total of 4 hours. We collected a total of 5 large lawn bags full of litter, blown trash, and even sharp objects that are harmful to both animals and humans. It was a little chilly and windy early this morning, but we dressed for the occasion and had such a great time together. Highly recommend for team bonding opportunities!

The college is doing a cleanup as part of our service day in two weeks. This time of year it’s so nice to get outside, and all that winter trash is getting cleaned up!

How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

Every time I plant in nature, whether it be a tree, a flower, fruit, or a vegetable in my garden- I am relaxed, focused, and the smells of soil and earth create a happy mental state for me. Hiking and plants/gardening are both hobbies of mine, so this comes natural to me. I like to thank my grandpa for the positive influence he has had on me since a small child.

My family planted peonies along the side of our front yard. Bees love the nectar and are great pollinators! I have been keeping an eye on the area that I planted, as the squirrels have been digging at them already.
