Wouter's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 10 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 10 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 10 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Climate + Air
Alternative and locally sourced Milk
My family and myself drink a lot of cow milk (appr. 1 liter p.d.). We will only drink oat milk for the entire month, which is sourced locally, to ensure no externalities are created (e.g. as with Soya Milk coming in from South America)
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Story Telling
I will borrow book(s) on biodiversity at the library, and read it to my sons every other day so I learn more on this topic, and the next generation does as well.
Land + Forests
Local Swiss Fruits and Veggies
I will buy all my fruits and vegetables for the entire month at local farmers within the canton of Zug, to reduce plastic waste, as well as reduce CO2 related to transport and handling.
Climate + Air
Article 9 Impact Funds
Allocate 50% of my monthly investment funds into Article 9 Funds (highest level of direct positive impact on environmental and social factors)
Freshwater + Oceans
Lean and Clean
I will shower no longer than 1 minute every day and maximum 1 one time per day

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Wouter Jaspers 4/27/2024 3:15 AMMarigolds and roses are popular with bees and are edible balcony flowers, which can be used to complement your own menu (and these survive Swiss weather conditions) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Wouter Jaspers 4/27/2024 3:02 AMThis was hard, specifically for waste from vegetables and fruits (and not having a garden to compost). Luckily we have the option to recycle through the government!-
Shobal Roy 4/27/2024 3:17 AMI had a insight on this as well.

Wouter Jaspers 4/25/2024 11:44 PMJust came back from a trip to Sweden. Great to see the amount of nature that is still well preserved!-
Ulrika Lindstrom 4/26/2024 2:33 AMI'm obviously biased since Sweden is my home country, but I agree with you. There is still vast nature there, in the county where I grew up the population ratio is only 3 people per km2, the overall number for Sweden is 25 / km2 (2018 numbers). For Switzerland is 211 / km2 and in India it's 413. That leaves a lot of room for nature in Sweden! :) -
Ioana Tanta 4/25/2024 11:48 PMYes, indeed!
I know that they have companies dedicated to planting trees to help combat deforestation, restore ecosystems, and mitigate climate change.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and PaperBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Wouter Jaspers 4/21/2024 10:33 PMBeing back home in the Netherlands, one of the most densely built countries in the world, I immediately miss the nature and space we have in Switzerland. Beyond carbon sequestration, forests provide a peace of mind, and calmness I appreciate more than ever. -
Wouter Jaspers 4/21/2024 10:06 PMNot sure I learned a lot on biodiversity during this moment, but had a lot of fun staying the weekend on a farm!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Personal Waste AuditWhat are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?
Wouter Jaspers 4/21/2024 9:50 PMMonitoring our waste for a while now. Around 70% of our waste can be composted. Wondering if we can anything more worthwhile with this waste.
