Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Stephanie Cowan 4/22/2024 6:32 AMToday I took the train with a colleague to travel 300 miles to Manchester instead of taking a flight. The journey was actually a lot less stressful than flying. Even the packing process and remembering to sort liquids separately was a lot easier. The train journey was very pleasant and we arrived at our destination this morning still energised to get to work! :)-
Edgardo V. Chiari M. 4/29/2024 9:07 AMWell done Stephanie! -

Stephanie Cowan 4/19/2024 8:14 AMA few pics from a trip we made last weekend to the local beach. We were foraging for natural stones to make a feature in our garden. Then we stopped off at the local ecology centre for a tour and education on the activities they are doing over there to help the environment, was a fun day out for us and the dogs! :)-
Michel Ngamo 4/20/2024 1:58 AMNice pictures Stephanie! -

Stephanie Cowan 4/08/2024 5:16 AMManaged to clock up another 45km for my virtual walking challenge this weekend, only 178km to go!
A lot of time was spent outdoors exploring a few of our local nature hotspots which also removed the need to take the car! :)-
Ben Alleyne 4/22/2024 9:51 AMGlorious countryside! Cracking pics Steph! -
Alexandra Sabau 4/09/2024 12:11 AMWay to go Steph! Wishing you lots of energy and good weather to complete the remaining 178km :D -

Stephanie Cowan 4/05/2024 5:21 AMSharing another good tip, when you use water to boil vegetables when cooking, save the water, leave it to cool then use it to water and feed your houseplants :)-
Ben Alleyne 4/08/2024 5:04 AMGreat tip, I often steam my veg for Sunday dinner then use the water for the gravy. Locks in additional flavour and nutrients from the veggies. -
Alexander König 4/05/2024 11:06 AMGreat idea! I also use the coffee ground as fertiliser, but never thought about the cooking water of vegetables!

-
Stephanie Cowan 4/05/2024 5:19 AMAnother new sustainable trick we have started doing at home is using the coffee grounds from the machine to add to the soil in our garden to fertilise the plants. Coffee grounds are rich in nutrients and help fertilise the soil and also help repel slugs and snails! :-)-
Ben Alleyne 4/08/2024 5:05 AMI do the same! -
Ana Belen Ramos 4/05/2024 8:46 AMWow! this is amazing! we should all try to do similar actions to help the environment more!

Stephanie Cowan 4/04/2024 7:58 AMHello team, I am participating in a virtual walking challenge with my friends, our goal is to walk the length of the Grand Canyon (450.6km) this month. This is a great opportunity for us to get outdoors locally where we live and for every 50km completed, we stop 50 plastic bottles from being sent out to the ocean and we plant a tree! Right now I am at the Colorado River having completed 219km, only 231 to go! :-)-
Alexander König 4/04/2024 12:47 PMBrilliant! You already did quite some distance!! And very nice idea of combining with the bottles and trees. Wishing you good luck to achieve your goals! -
Tünde Benő 4/04/2024 10:26 AMOao! Maybe you can share some photos from your trip!
