Therese's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Cumberland River Cleanup
Kayak cleanup 5/9/24 of a nearby river because I despise seeing trash, it will beautify my community and because I can.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Land + Forests
Prairie restoration
I will plant with a group, the Cumberland River Compact to restore a prairie on 4/27/24 because it will be beautiful, this is an effort in my community and because I can.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 10 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Therese Herzog 4/30/2024 12:22 PMMy final post: Earth Day plantings, its' been fun, thanks! -
Therese Herzog 4/29/2024 8:03 AMI was able to pick up 200 pieces of trash in 30 minutes in my neighborhood. Sad. Mostly bottles, cans, cigarette butts. -
Therese Herzog 4/28/2024 12:10 PMToday, I took a different route walking early in the morning and was sad to fill my trash bag before I finished. Lots of drinking and tossing goes on in the country roads near my home in TN. I think we need a movie theatre or bowling alley! -
Therese Herzog 4/27/2024 4:50 PMPrairie restoration in Clarksville today... We planted 1000 plants!-

Therese Herzog 4/25/2024 4:42 PMI read an encouraging article on LinkedIn about Africa Green Tech that gave me some hope about the future. As did the webinar. We are not saving the earth, it will go on without us...we are taking steps to save humankind through conservation efforts.-
Ajay Patidar 4/25/2024 4:46 PMAbsolutely. We are trying to save ourselves.

Therese Herzog 4/24/2024 4:08 PMI just read an article in the LA Times about the cities in Southern California with the best air quality and my home of 25 years, Altadena, was one of three mentioned! Who knew? -
Therese Herzog 4/24/2024 4:05 PMI follow Silicon Ranch and this segment about Houston Solar/Silicon Ranch working with local farmers to help sheep populations thrive under the panels was very interesting. https://youtu.be/1O4VkhhQabg?si=Pl2Tmtb7MYe1Nyy5 -
Therese Herzog 4/24/2024 3:52 PMI learned this week that the Mojave desert tortoise is now on the endangered species list. Growing up these lovely creatures were just part of our ecosystem in California. Ironically, large solar panel projects are part of the problem: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/mojave-desert-tortoise-officially-joins-californias-endangered-list/ar-AA1nlp7f?ocid=socialshare-
Dina Lomagno 4/24/2024 4:01 PMThat is so sad, while I was viewing the endangered list I saw so many that I had no idea were declining in numbers.
