Rico's actions

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 16
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

UNCOMPLETED

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

UNCOMPLETED

Action Track: Community

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

UNCOMPLETED

Brought my lunch today (Brown rice + spinach, another vegetarian meal) while visiting Leicester office.

Walked to the post office rather than driving. One stone, two birds - saved on fuel but also got some fresh air.

Cooked another vegetarian dinner today - noodle and vegetable soup, using only 3 ingredients: olive oil, sea salt and black pepper. The simpler, the healthier...

I made a all vegetable dinner - garden peas with Tofu in miso soup. Delicious!

Only 1 meal planned for today as we'll go out to eat to celebrate James's finishing his mock exam. Will practice caution to avoid ordering too much food.

I had some spring onion left in the fridge and it's perfect for egg fried rice. I cooked that for James's lunch tomorrow. He will love it.

Have you tried to grow the end of the spring onion? You can sprout a whole new onion by placing it in a cup of water. (It's also a fun project for kids to try!)

That's awesome! We started meal prepping on Sundays to clean out our fridge/freezer with what we have. We have made some pretty creative and delicious meals!

I learned something interesting today about seafood consumption. Salmon is considered to be one of the keystone specifies - a species without which the ecosystem would change dramatically. Salmon spend most of their lives at sea. So when they return inland to spawn and die, they bring ocean nutrients—stored in their bodies—with them upstream, sometimes hundreds of miles, depositing nitrogen and phosphorus that forests need.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

The UK government's healthy eating guidelines now recommend that consumers choose fish from sustainable sources. This includes opting for Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified seafood. I need to take steps to check the label to ensure I buy sustainable fish going forward.
