Jo-A's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Land + Forests
Advocate for Forest Protection
Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 5 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 10 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 15 hours in my community.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Carry My Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Freshwater + Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Today, I’m challenging my office mate to a zero-waste lunch showdown! On one side, it’s me with my reusable bag, lunch box, watercup and utensils, championing the cause of sustainability. On the other side, it’s my office mate, armed with a Jollibee lunch, complete with plastic water bottles and utensils. Even though the packaging is paper-based, it still contributes to waste. Let’s see who comes out on top in this eco-challenge. Remember, every small step towards sustainability counts! -

Day 18 of the EcoChallenge, and my home garden in Manila has become a symbol of sustainability for me. The highlight is my lemon tree, which is now in full bloom. Each flower promises a future lemon, embodying the potential of nature to provide. This tree is more than just a source of fresh, organic lemons. It’s a testament to the power of sustainable living, turning sunlight and water into food, and absorbing carbon dioxide in the process. It’s a daily reminder that nature, when respected and nurtured, gives back generously. This journey has taught me that sustainability isn’t just about big changes; it’s also about appreciating and fostering life in our own backyards.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What results did you see? Please consider posting a photo of your cleanup!
Jo-A Lozano 4/17/2024 2:02 AMReflecting on the coastal cleanup we did last Monday, the experience was truly enriching. Working hand-in-hand with fellow volunteers to restore our environment filled me with a sense of pride and camaraderie. It was a tangible reminder of the power of collective action. The transformation of our community was evident - from a littered landscape to a cleaner, more vibrant space. The smiles on everyone’s faces and the renewed beauty of our surroundings were the most rewarding results. While I can’t post a photo here, I encourage everyone to capture these moments and share them to inspire others.I have posted some photos in my feed but it will forever be in my memories. Together, we can make a difference.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Jo-A Lozano 4/17/2024 1:57 AMIt’s clear that it profoundly enhances our community and transforms our relationship with it. Volunteering, whether it’s for coastal cleanups or local education programs, fosters a sense of unity and shared responsibility. It bridges social gaps and brings us closer to understanding the diverse narratives within our community. More importantly, it changes our relationship with our community from being mere residents to becoming active stewards. We begin to see our community not just as a place we live in, but a place we are a part of and have the power to shape and improve. This shift in perspective is perhaps the most significant change volunteering brings about. -

Spending day 15 of the ecochallenge with the Emerson Manila team to do a coastal cleanup activity at the Wetland Islands in Las Piñas, As we combed the shores and mangroves, the kilos of waste we gathered were a stark reminder of how our everyday consumption habits directly impact our coastal areas. Plastic bottles, wrappers, and discarded items—all remnants of our daily lives—washed up on these shores. In just a short span of time and within a limited area, we witnessed the sad reality of how our waste finds its way to the areas we cherish. This eye-opening experience has fueled our commitment to responsible waste management and the urgent need to protect our oceans. Let’s turn the tide, one cleanup at a time! -

On Day 14 of the ecochallenge, our family and friends embarked on a camping trip in Mount Banahaw. Amidst towering trees and the scenic mountains, we discovered that sustainability and nature go hand in hand. Armed with reusable water bottles, secondhand gear, and a commitment to the Leave No Trace principles, we minimized our impact on the environment. We cooked over campfires, reveled in starlit nights, and reveled in the joy of being surrounded by nature’s beauty. It was a true test of our ability to tread lightly while enjoying the great outdoors -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and SouvenirsHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Jo-A Lozano 4/12/2024 9:34 PMOur consumption choices has a profound impact on both wildlife health and community well-being. When we opt for unsustainable practices, such as overexploitation of wildlife through trade or as food, we inadvertently contribute to biodiversity loss. Additionally, our interactions with wildlife can escalate the risk of diseases, which originate in animals. Wet markets and similar wildlife trading centers, if not managed hygienically, pose threats to both wildlife and human health.-

Jo-A Lozano 4/12/2024 9:04 PMDay 13 of the Ecochallenge journey, let’s recognize the vital role of initiating our kids into sustainability practices. As stewards of tomorrow, they need to understand the significance of reducing waste and protecting our environment. One practical example is encouraging them to use reusable water containers during their sports activities. By doing so, we instill habits that not only benefit their health but also contribute to a plastic-free world.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Invest in NatureWhat did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?
Jo-A Lozano 4/12/2024 12:56 AMI’ve learned that investing can play a pivotal role in supporting the environment and creating a more sustainable world. By channeling our investments towards local businesses that prioritize eco-friendly practices and sustainable development, we can contribute to the city’s environmental resilience. This not only helps mitigate the effects of climate change in our city but also promotes economic growth and job creation in green industries. It’s truly inspiring to see how our financial decisions can make a tangible impact on Manila’s environmental sustainability and economic prosperity.
