Jenna's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 20 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Second hand clothes

Swap your second-hand clothes for someone else's second-hand clothes. This way, you don't have to throw away your worn-out clothes and you can refresh your wardrobe in an environmentally friendly way.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Use Public Transit

Public transportation reduces pollution, improves community, and creates safe streets. I will use public transit 3 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Carry My Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.

COMPLETED 23

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

Feeling really encouraged by all the great photos shared in our team's feed, and all the different Earth Day activities others have shared from all over the world!!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Use Public Transit
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    Jenna Palka's avatar
    Jenna Palka 4/23/2024 11:11 AM
My experience with this respect has changed a lot since living in Europe (England and now France) for a bit over a year in a half. During that time, I have not owned a car and have relied primarily on public transport, as well as biking and sometimes carpooling or Ubering to get around. This is very different from when I lived in the US, when having a car was pretty essential to commute, run errands, and see family.

Overall, this experience has increased my appreciation for public transport infrastructure and urban planning with accessibility via that transport in mind. This is something I studied in theory in university when I studied transportation systems, and it's interesting to see how it plays out in my personal life.

Now, I definitely have a greater appreciation that where you live has a huge impact on how you live in terms of the availability of different forms of transportation and its effect on how you get around.

    Happy Earth Day everyone!! 🌍🌱❤

You may already know this, but this year's theme is planet vs plastics to advocate for the reduction of plastic production

Earthday.org has some interesting information if you want to learn more about the importance of this objective -- really amazing how plastic is truly everywhere. I will definitely continue to work on reducing the amount of plastic in my life, especially single-use!!

Freshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

It was interesting to research this!
I found this local report with details on the slow progress of fishing more sustainably throughout France. In 2023, 56% of fish (by volume) are sustainably caught which is only 7% more than the year prior and leaves a lot of room for improvement to the target of 100%

It included this interesting infographic which shows how different species are impacted and where they're fished:

The overall impact of seafood is impressive: not only from an environmental standpoint but also with respect to its human or social effects.
Definitely seems worthwhile to be mindful when purchasing and consuming seafood!! Salmon is the fish I buy most commonly, so I appreciated this article with tips on finding sustainably fished salmon.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

    Jenna Palka's avatar
    Jenna Palka 4/14/2024 1:08 PM
Today I worked in the garden with my neighbor at her plot in the community garden.
It's a great example of a sharing economy since there are common resources for everyone there to benefit from (for instance tools, rainwater collection, and compost). Plus, when it is time to harvest the fruits and vegetables are often shared between gardeners as well as other neighbors and friends!

I appreciate the mindset of a sharing economy because it shifts the focus to the community and collective needs instead of the individual. It is nice to watch out for each other, and feels good to know that others are thinking of you as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Jenna Palka's avatar
    Jenna Palka 4/13/2024 2:29 PM
My personal water footprint is 1,056 gallons/day, with the largest component being virtual footprint.

I learned there are a few simple changes I can make to consider to reduce my footprint: for instance - drinking more tea instead of coffee (tea has about 1/4 the virtual footprint of coffee) and eating less meat

Integrated Water Resource Management is a new concept to me which I'm interested to learn more about, here's another article I found with additional detail.
