Vicky's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Action Track: Community
Recycling in the Cork & Dublin Offices
With the introduction of the recycling return scheme where we are charged at the till 15 cent per can and 25 cent per bottle, I am having recycling bins put in to each of the offices and asking our employees to drop their cans & bottles. At a particular time in the year, I will then return the items and I will be issued with a deposit refund to be spent in store. The purchases made would be by way of food hampers which we will then present to our charity that we partner with - EPIC, focuses on children and young adults in the care system.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Freshwater + Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Vicky Dolan 4/24/2024 12:08 AMWith the month almost over, I think the fact that this topic was a daily agenda, really hammers home the importance of conservation. I find myself taking stock and challenging myself on some habits that I took for granted that do in fact impact on our environment. -
Vicky Dolan 4/19/2024 7:36 AMAt the final stages of getting the new recycling containers installed in both the Cork & Dublin offices. Comms in draft format, almost ready to go. Showing our commitment to both the environment but also using this as a great fund raiser for our chosen charity based on the re-turn deposit scheme for the recycling of plastic bottles and cans.-
Ulrika Lindstrom 4/20/2024 12:28 AMWay to go making it easier for employees to make good decisions! :) -

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Vicky Dolan 4/17/2024 12:29 AMHow easy it is to get used to convenience and rely on it with the likes of water bottles. Especially with this new refundable plastic bottles & cans tax introduced in Ireland, you can see the habits of people change around you and this has in turn increased peoples attitudes to recycling. -
Vicky Dolan 4/09/2024 12:45 AMIt's going well, learning lots and making me more aware about the parts we all play everyday and the choices we make that impact everything around us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Vicky Dolan 4/09/2024 12:43 AMI was out with friends and instead of buying a new outfit, I challenged myself to borrow a dress. There are 8 girls in my friend group, and there is always something we each like on each other. I got to wear one of my favourite dresses (was careful not to spoil it) and returned to her just as she gave it to me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Vicky Dolan 4/09/2024 12:41 AMI am more conscious of my water usage. Especially in the shower and on hair day when I tend to take longer. I have started to track how long it takes and set myself a challenge to reduce the time spent, so less day dreaming and more focus in getting in and out. Not only does it reduce my water usage, it gives me back some time!
