Shahin's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 120 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Land + Forests
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 5 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Land + Forests
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 300 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 25 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 20 hours in my community.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 20 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Freshwater + Oceans
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 35 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 25 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Climate + Air
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Shahin Meah 4/28/2024 12:30 PMI attended a fascinating live production from Luiza Prado of the 'Kitchen Network' yesterday where three community cooks were asked to create a dish using locally sourced ingredients presented to them in a mystery box... they had 45 minutes to barter ingredients with each other and prepare their dish. The production was very insightful and through provoking! Our impact on our planet and environment is changing habitats and eco-systems. Some ingredients will become extinct and others rare. Scarcity will raise prices and history shows it can create disputes across lands and boarders. Food is sustenance, it is medicine and it nourishes our body and souls. We all have a relationship with ingredients, we have stories on how we use them to create dishes unique to our culture and where we grew up. Its what binds us together and through communication, experiences and skills, we combine knowledge and creativity to carry forward to generations to come, our identity, our culture and heritage. What ingredients are unique to you or the region you grew up?

Julian Annison 4/29/2024 6:47 AMFascinating and what a great idea - I can feel a twist to the APIA cooking sessions coming up. Also reminds me of a different but similar approach we ran at St Peters last year - A Meal for Everyone. Idea being to enable people to come together to share cooking skills using food from the Food Bank to prepare easily replicated meals themselves afterwards from what was available and surplus that week.

Shahin Meah 4/26/2024 4:00 PMIndian restaurants in the 70's provided takeaway meals to customers who provided their own tupperware to take dishes home with them. Maybe an option for us to consider re-introducing?-
Julian Annison 4/29/2024 6:51 AMGreat idea. However where else would I get my containers to store all those screws/nails/etc into ;-) More seriously - wonder if a "deposit" scheme could work using re-usable tubs and you "exchange" them back each time - a bit like gas bottle schemes.

Shahin Meah 4/25/2024 1:57 AMZero scape gardens are becoming popular as people are short on time. However, this has an impact on food availability for wild life, particularly birds. Take time to observe the wild life visiting your gardens and put out bird food to nourish them during this time. A possible benefit of doing so could save more of the buds on your fruit trees to blossom and grow fruits for all to enjoy in the summer.-
Wouter Jaspers 4/25/2024 11:43 PMThanks Shahin!

Shahin Meah 4/24/2024 7:19 AMWith the advent or more supermarket 'local' stores available... ask yourself, is it really necessary to pop out and get that one ingredient.. vs waiting for your next major shopping trip? -
Shahin Meah 4/24/2024 7:16 AMTake the healthy option and walk... if its safe to do so.-
Alexander König 4/24/2024 8:09 AMI like that! Safe, healthy, and sustainable!!
...and cost efficient! :-) -
Keyla Ahrens 4/24/2024 7:27 AMYes, totally agree! -
Trity T 4/24/2024 7:23 AMGreat!

Shahin Meah 4/24/2024 7:14 AMAvoid BOGOF promotions in the supermarket and remove temptation to buy more than what you need by saying goodbye to your Costco membership!-
Julian Annison 4/25/2024 6:01 AMMaybe….. Costco with Care !?!?!?
.
Although with my sons, nothing every seems to go uneaten.
However, I do also worry the way their often goods are over packaged and hard to separate out to recycle

Shahin Meah 4/23/2024 2:01 AMOnly purchasing seasonal vegetables is a great way to learn about agriculture and make conscious choices in your shopping habits and seek out local markets to support local farmers/growers and reduce food airmiles.-
Alexander König 4/23/2024 2:55 AMSeasonal and local vegetables/fruit also have more vitamins than the unripe fruit transported to us in ships...
