UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper Products

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. I will learn about certification labels and buy wood and paper products certified as sustainable or recycled to protect forests and reduce environmental harm.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Produce No Waste for a Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags do not always end up in landfills and if they aren't properly disposed of. In nature, they can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and harm wildlife. When I go shopping, I will be sure to bring my own bags to reduce waste and the chance that plastic bags could find their way into wildlife habitats.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

In 2022, New Jersey, my home for the last few years, banned stores and food service businesses from providing or selling plastic bags. Grocery stores would not provide or sell plastic or paper bags. Customers, including myself, quickly learned the habit to always have a bag on hand (or when you did forget we became excellent jugglers/balancers of our groceries). It's amazing how once the option doesn't exist how quickly you adapt and learn the more sustainable way without thinking twice.

I can relate to this David :-).
In some ways, US stores were ahead of the game in the 70-80's with paper bags that you had to support from the bottom. I guess the advent of the shopping trolley changed all that!

Very true David - you soon adjust and have a different approach. Without hopefully sounding too sad - I like the heavy bag for life made from like tarp material we now get from some supermarkets - have a stock in the car - but you know.... always forget occasionally and end up juggling like you said !!
