Julian's actions

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Most appropriate heating for your house

Providing heating in a home is a basic necessity - but how best to achieve it. There are many parameters about usage, energy efficiency, insulation, sources - all of which are evolving as technology changes. I will research and consider actions ahead of next winter

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Pick Up the Phone

I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues to make 1 phone calls to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 2 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 20 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Advocate for Forest Protection

Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 1 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I feel that there is still so much more to share - but maybe all things come to an end...... or does it !

    Wanted to share this
I loved these flowers on this cacti from my vacation

    And even better
Most had bees feasting on the pollen
They were yellow by they time they finished diving

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Zero Waste Day
What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

    Julian Annison's avatar
    Julian Annison 4/30/2024 5:13 AM
Although I think we all try this in some way each day - I tried it specifically on 2 different days - and to be honest failed both times - but did highlight the issues to look - as if that was the purpose !!!
At home it was food packaging that i found hardest. Our grey waste has halved over the last couple of years and recycle gone up - but still waste. Each meal I made seemed to have some food wrapper or container that although often minimised was still there. I realise there is an balance between food waste / preservation verses wrapping - but certainly one to focus on for us.
On holiday is was plastics. Water by default always came in bottles - masses of them. We tried where possible to use the water feature of the soda drinks machine to fill our normal bottles , plus a few disposable ones, but got very funny looks from the staff. Water purity was an issue but it was also seen as "polite" for staff to keep providing bottles each time.
Plastic glasses were the other issue as glass was not allowed in outside areas for HSE around pools etc. Culture was a new plastic cup each time - we put our names on ours and tried to reuse, but every time not looking they were kindly cleared away and replaced with new. Answer was to kindly always decline and then go get any drinks yourself forcing the re-use of plastics. Small wins and many strange looks

    Julian Annison 4/30/2024 4:58 AM
I think any activity like this is better taken on as a collaborative challenge - not just for the motivation and shared experience, but also to flag the importance. We had intended to try and have a village walk with a couple of families early on in the month, but it was washed out. So instead we took the opportunity for 2 of us to collect plastics on our beach walk in Llandudno. There was less "big waste" like bottles - but more small stuff - caps, part cans, broken stuff - than expected
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Explore My Area
Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

    Julian Annison's avatar
    Julian Annison 4/30/2024 4:48 AM
We are lucky that to the north side of our village are still some farms and land with public access routes. We explored an area that was a corridor of woodland just next to the Welsh border. Sadly some of the paths have been made "difficult" to follow, either through nature, or intervention, but still on the whole accessible. Strange when you get tot the end you are on next to a dual carrageway built some years back - however with a path in a safe are to the next crossing point.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Julian Annison's avatar
    Julian Annison 4/30/2024 4:38 AM
I found it interesting that the biggest impact for my family for water usage came from our diet - even though we were 2/3 of the average.
My son works for a water company and we have installed a number of water limiter devices on things like showers and taps. Worryingly if I look at bathroom adverts then these days it is all about those overhead flood showers that use lots of water.
We are also lucky that we have a well next to the old part of the house. This was in the 1800s the main water supply for the house. We have a pump that allows us to use with the water barrels for any garden watering - albeit not something I do often !!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Invest in Nature
What did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?

    Julian Annison's avatar
    Julian Annison 4/30/2024 4:27 AM
Interesting that in the Uk the rules are changing for investment funds

From May 2024, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) ‘anti-greenwashing’ rule will ban funds from using language like ‘sustainable’, ‘green’, or ‘responsible’ without justifying it

There will now be 4 fund lables with definitions behind them

    • Sustainability impact – funds that invest in assets directly making a positive impact.
    • Sustainability focus – funds that invest in assets meeting a robust, evidence-based standard of sustainability.
    • Sustainability improvers – funds that invest in assets that have the potential to meet a robust, evidence-based standard of sustainability.
    • Sustainability mixed goals – funds with this label invest in a mix of the above styles.

At least 70% of the assets held in a fund must be invested according to the sustainability objective set out by the fund’s manager, which must fall into one of the above four categories.

Back to this quiz question from Friday...... What is growing here in the blue bags......

Well - maybe I should be embarrassed by this - but I had never seen bananas growing in person - only I guess in books etc
To answer Alexander - I was in Cypus on vacation

    Fascinating to see
Quite short plants - and most surprising - feels like the bananas are upside down !!- I had expected them to curve downwards
    One "bunch" per plant

At the bottom of the stem you can see later growth and the early stages

With a really strange flower ??

These are not big "plantations" - but small patches of land - say upto a few 1000m2 with maybe 50-200 plants on random patches of land between buildings and other crops.
    Some mature - some young

    Why are they bagged ??
    From Google...
Bagging consists in placing a cover over the bunch to protect the fruit against damage caused by insects and other animals, by rubbing against the leaves or by the application of chemical products . The innovation is attributed to Carlos Gonzales Fajardo in 1956 in Guatemala. The practice has since spread to all export plantations and is considered essential to increase yield and improve fruit quality. The cover creates a microclimate that maintains a high temperature and prevents chill damage. . This microclimate can reduce by many days the flower-to-harvest interval (between 4 to 14 days depending on the type of cover and the environmental conditions) and increase bunch weight.

So it might seem strange - but I was fascinated to see these

And yes, annoyingly to others in the car, I did quote minions every time we drove past a crop

Well - might not have found them in North Wales !
However - also no idea that they were such a big producer in Cyprus

      Brilliant summary!
That was really a tricky quiz questions as I thought you are in the UK and I didn't expect you to find some bananas there! Actually I assumed you are visiting some botanic garden or so... :-)

So following a week of vacation - I feel I have so much to share about how I may have viewed things differently when thinking about things with a different prospective

But first - lets go back to the fun fact/quiz I tried to get your involvement with on Friday !

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Weekly Meal Planning
How did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?

    Julian Annison's avatar
    Julian Annison 4/28/2024 2:30 PM
I have to admit, when I do the food shopping it’s a mixture of planned and adaptive. Planned does help reduce those “extras” that may not be needed, but also reactive helps adapt to what you then find that might be more suitable.
For good or for bad, I probably use more frozen veg than others might. I found we sometime let fresh get forgotten and then wasted, or more than the right portion size and then leftover wasted.
Frozen allows me to adapt quantities pending who home for dinner and give a good variety of veg. Obviously this only works for some veg types!!
Oh, and I also flex around the end of date reduced items, for all the reasons we have discussed before in the team.
