Advocate For Better Food Packaging

When companies and governments make large-scale changes to their products and practices, it makes sustainability more accessible to the masses, in turn creating further demand for sustainable products, and the cycle continues. I will advocate for improved, sustainable food packaging through petitions, letters, or by supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly packaging - and share my advocacy actions on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Visit or Learn About a Culturally Significant Site Near Me

Sites of cultural and spiritual significance hold deep meaning for many communities, particularly Indigenous peoples. I will learn about or visit a site near me that is significant to the history, culture, or environment of the area. I will approach my visit with respect by researching its importance and guidelines beforehand, reflecting on how we can preserve these spaces for future generations.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 16
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Health and Well-Being

Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep

Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 30 minutes of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Health and Well-Being

Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 9

See my other comment around "Swap and Share" as I find these often come together for me.

As well as "collecting" engineering stuff - I do have a real passion for repairing things. Not just from the wastage issue of our disposable society, but also sometimes the challenge and being able to "see" how it works (or not!)
However the greatest satisfaction really helping someone to repair it themselves. It does not have to be super technical or complicated- it can be simply equipping them to do what they know but don't have the right tools or fear to start.
I guess one advantage if something is really broken - is that they cant make it worse - so give it a go !
Its a good social and supportive activity along with coffee and chocolate - hence the success of the "Men in Sheds" charity.

Being handy and able to repair things is a very useful skill to have! You make a great point about not being afraid to try, learning by doing really is the trick!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community and Connection
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

It would be an underestimate to say I like collecting engineering "stuff" !!
I'm also lucky enough to have some similar minded friends - so over the years we have built up a collection of the more unusual tools and equipment for working on vehicles, construction or more industrial jobs.
For more expensive items we often "club" together to buy things or take it in turns to buy things that we need now, but know the others are likely to need at some point.
Coming from different aspects of engineering does also mean we have different collections built up over our careers.
This does mean we can support friends, family and wider community with both practical advice and the means to take on things that they are safely capable of.
Just the problem of storage and learning when something really wont be of use in the future - just in case...

To cut or not to cut - that is the question!

I was cutting the lawns last night and trying to navigate around what to leave wild.

Normally we decide to leave the far half the lawn as “wild” which hopefully helps the pollinators, wild flowers and of course our cats think it’s great fun to play in. But- every autumn it’s really difficult to get back in control and is killing off the grass.

This year I’m trying a “patchwork” approach. Leaving areas that already are showing “wilding” in different patches around the garden. (As in the photo above)

Maybe I cycle these around as different plants show signs of growing?

    Any advice team?

Finally managed to get away this weekend
Not a bad way to have breakfast on a Sunday morning with friends

Great to spend time in the heart of Shropshire countryside, miles from anywhere at what was once a Manor House for the estate, now a retreat.
Great chance to catch up on those Ecochallenge actions !!!!, with the added benefit of no signal, so there will have to be lots of catching up tomorrow when back in the real world.

    Nature can be surprisingly resilient.

I drove past this young tree and thought
    - how wonderful it had grown where an ancient tree had fallen a long time ago.

Second time I drove past it I thought
    - you know that really is stunning but something is not quite right

Third time I had to stop and take a closer look
    - it is fact not another tree - but the fallen ancient tree is in fact still alive. One of the branches has survived and is now flourishing to become the next generation

    Nature can be so amazing

I came across this amazing field just full of them.
Normally it’s a grazing field, so when the cattle do rotate round back to here they will be so lucky.

Washing machines - we were talking about washing machines weren't we !!

So one of my greatest excitements at Christmas was to buy a new washing machine ( Oh and a replacement TV - kids remember to use the Wii Controller wrist straps next time)

I subscribe to an independent research group called "Which" in the UK who test many consumer products. They measure things like performance, costs, enviro etc in the evaluation.

What became evident was that modern machines really are way better than than certainly the 15 year old machine we had finally destroyed. Maybe not a reason to replace if you look at overall impact including manufacture - but certainly a game changer if you invest at replacment.

I was hesitant initially on the "Eco 40-60" wash setting as the machine has full control of the temp and no way was I going to be responsible for shrinking my son's hoodies!! However with research the name is actually misleading and comes from a European Standard to compare cycle duties

In fact this machine optimises elec and water at the sacrifice of extended times - adjusting settings based on the weight of the load
It claimed 0.22 KW of energy for a medium load in 2 hours
I was sad enough to measure it over a few cycles with a power meter and it was actually running at 0.26kw per load. That is so much better than typical 1-2kw for older machines or even the Cotton cycles below

So - it is worth checking out what new machines can do to reduce energy / water
    Quick calc - for us about 250-350KW /year - so upto £75/year
And - to properly understand all the bells and whistles they come with !!!!

Thanks Julian. I also need to change out my 18 year old washing machine. Good study - not sure I'll be measuring the actual consumption ...

No too surprisingly google was abundant with references to Responsible Tourism !
Amongst it all I decided to follow/trust the info from WWF - https://www.worldwildlife.org/pages/responsible-travel-tips
As well as their tips – what I did of course find interesting was their reference to - Travel with companies that have set Science Based Net-Zero climate targets, which aligns of course with what we have been advocating around working with https://sciencebasedtargets.org/net-zero
A lot of the “tips” where ones you would recognise – but I have picked out a few that I had maybe not considered
    1. Consider fewer, longer trips and to less popular locations.
    2. Establish a destination "basecamp" with day trips. It is often a more relaxing, immersive, rejuvenating experience that requires less packing and unpacking
    3. If traveling by air, minimize your carbon footprint by selecting non-stop flights and newer, more energy-efficient aircraft, traveling in economy, and packing light. Use the acronym: NERD (New, Economy, Regular, Direct)
    4. Use a toiletry kit with refillable soft containers and avoid using hotel toiletries and soaps if possible

I’m afraid I can’t take credit for this little summary…..

But I did think it was very relevant as I looked at my now rapidly growing lawns and thinking that’s a job for the weekend.
I normally leave half the lawn to go wild over the summer, but at the moment we have so many dandelions that I might leave it another week.
    Oh dear, that’s a shame😹

Not sure if I should consider this as - Re-use, Recycle. Up-cycle - or maybe pending my workmanship - Down-cycle !
One of my projects for the long Easter weekend was to replace a kitchen worktop. Our kitchen is old and needs a full revamp at some point in the future when appropriate, but for now we needed a new sink unit to replace ones that had started to rot.

I acquired some granite worktops from a kitchen being ripped out locally that were no longer of use and could be modified to to make them fit our use. As nothing in our old house is straight or square it was certainly a challenge to measure, template and fit as you don't get a chance to make mistakes working with granite. I enjoyed the all the cutting and shaping, but the polishing back to a gloss finish was certainly time consuming. The carrying and manoeuvring - well that was a challenge!

Its always difficult when doing a part refurbishment - where to stop. Any job uncovers far more things that need replacing and repairing than is practical - until you do a full revamp

Still significant work in progress and need to decide how the shape the next one - but at least we have for now given an extended life to our kitchen - using building materials that where probably going to end up going to waste.
...... and the kitchen handed back in time for family use !

Also now do a good line in granite slabs for BBQ/Pizza areas with whats left !
