Alessea's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 15 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 15 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 5 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 3 hours in my community.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

Alessea Lane 4/19/2024 11:54 AMAwesome day cleaning up trash in our frog and turtle friends’ home at town lake!
-
Fabrizio Riva 4/22/2024 10:52 AMI hope it's not poisonous! -
Bonnie Johnson 4/21/2024 4:35 PMDeanna and I saw quite a few turtles and one very large one. Kyle, your words were very impactful and well-written! -
Kyle Brown 4/19/2024 11:57 AMSo crazy, I had a very similar experience this morning during the clean up! As I was paddling through the shallow edges of Town Lake, methodically removing discarded bottles and tangled plastic, I felt a profound connection with the serene environment around me. And that was when suddenly, a large bright green frog (perhaps the very same one you saw) leapt onto a nearby lily pad, its eyes meeting mine with an earnest gaze. In that moment, something shifted inside me. The frog, unassuming yet resilient, reminded me of the importance of each individual's role in the grand tapestry of life. It seemed to silently challenge me to not only clean up this small piece of the earth but to also cleanse my intentions and actions. Inspired by this simple creature's tenacity, I renewed my commitment to not only care for nature but to strive to be a beacon of positive change in every aspect of my life. This small, everyday act of cleaning became a moment of clarity and purpose, pushing me to be the best version of myself—for the lake, for the wildlife, and for the community that surrounds us.

Alessea Lane 4/16/2024 3:28 PMSometimes it takes a while to see the fruits of your labor! When I moved into my home, there was a small pear tree with hardly any fruit in its first season. Now 2 years later it has at least doubled in size and has pears growing earlier than ever! I’m hoping one day my avocado seedling that is just getting started will catch up and provide just as well.
-
Wendy Saenz 4/26/2024 9:07 AMThis is neat! Avocado's would be great to grow! We eat so many at our house!
-
William Vaughan 4/19/2024 5:23 AMYou just have the touch. You are the difference. -
Ella Arce 4/17/2024 6:16 AMHow cool! Also, I love that container for the avocado. Super cute! -
Kyle Brown 4/16/2024 4:06 PMWay to avoca-GO!

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Alessea Lane 4/11/2024 3:29 PM'Texas Violet' Mealy Cup Sage (Salvia farinacea) is a favorite of bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds! This Texas native plant is also drought resistant, making it a great low-maintenance addition to any garden in the area.
-
Ella Arce 4/17/2024 6:24 AMBeautiful! I'll need to look this one up. A possible candidate to add to my garden! -
Kyle Brown 4/15/2024 7:42 AMAmazing! -
Bonnie Johnson 4/12/2024 1:28 PMBeautiful picture! I have some too and they like to spread. That reminds me, it must be about time to put my hummingbird feeder out. -
Kerry Keck 4/11/2024 3:46 PMThis is my favorite native plant. It blooms here (here the Texas Gulf Coast) from mid-March through November. There are pollinators on this plant throughout that entire time!
