Ella's actions

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 3 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 120 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR

On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

COMPLETED

I've had a blast being part of this year's EcoChallenge! I've learned a lot and had the opportunity to meet so many great people. I will work to keep up the newfound habits I've developed from this experience and I hope you all will too! Here's to an even better Ecochallenge next year!

If we all try to make a difference, even if it is only a small impact in the grand scheme of our loves, it adds up quick. I would love to see Ecochallenge be a way for people to connect outside as well, esepcially via LinkedIn for all of the professionals in fields related to sustainably.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Ella Arce's avatar
    Ella Arce 4/24/2024 6:33 PM
I am so grateful for this challenge. It has helped me become more aware of my environment. I hadn't realized, but I had learned to ignore trash in nature, on the side of the roads, in lakes. I've become more conscious, and with that consciousness comes more determination to care for our environment and to inspire others to do so as well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Plastic in Clothing and Water
How did you try to catch the release of microplastics in your laundry? What did you learn in the process?

    Ella Arce's avatar
    Ella Arce 4/17/2024 6:44 PM
I'm finally investing in a GuppyFriend bag to wash some of my synethic clothes in and reduce the microplastics released from them! I learned that scientists estimate 35% of the microplastics polluting our oceans come from textiles. I don't buy polyester clothing new anymore and I aim to phase them out entirely in the next several years.

During my time outside today, I saw a lovely pigeon out for a stroll, a friendly lizard looking for a snack, and a team of ants, building a city. What an amazing plant we live on!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Ella Arce's avatar
    Ella Arce 4/15/2024 5:59 AM
I regularly use plastic bags since I order a lot of take out. This is a bad habit carried over from COVID days and I'm actively working to eliminate it. I'm going to reduce my impact by preparing meals at home for at least two days out of the week.

Yes! I love HEB for this. Currently, I recycle the bags there or Sprouts which also offers a bag recycling program! Any not recycled, I reuse as trash bags. In the future, I'd really like to eliminate receiving them altogether.

That's wonderful that you're finding good use for those bags!

I know HEB takes them back and saw this on their site on how they recycle plastic: https://ourtexasourfuture.com/plastic-bag-recycling/
I noticed my vet always uses different bags when you buy supplies, so now when I take my dogs I collect them up and bring them in and he is happy to get them! I need to prepare more meals at home too!

I'm loving being a part of cleaning up my neighborhood while enjoying the beautiful outdoors! This is certainly a habit that I'm going to work to keep past earth month.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Ella Arce's avatar
    Ella Arce 4/09/2024 6:00 AM
I learned that a big area for me to improve on my water footprint is showering. I tend to take longer showers, which is a luxury that I'm grateful to have available to me. I'm going to work to reduce my showers to 10 - 15 minutes and begin catching any unused shower water for rinsing recyclables.

It was a bit rainy but that didn't stop me from enjoying the outdoors!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Calculate My Carbon Impact
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Ella Arce's avatar
    Ella Arce 4/05/2024 7:52 PM
Definitely transportation. It's a evident that I can do more. My partner and I carpool already but this year we're moving closer to work to cut our driving down from 20 miles a day to 10. We are moving to a house to enable both of us to work from home more days a week and avoid driving altogether. I'm also going to start donating to organizations that work to offset carbon emissions and incorporate more vegan meals into my weekly diet.
