Kyle's actions

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 8 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 25
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 240 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

COMPLETED

    More cat posts!

Growing up with outdoor cats, I never thought I would be a "cat on a leash person". Though a few years ago while assessing the positive/negative impacts of renewable energy for a school project, one recurring point made by those against wind turbines and concentrated solar energy terminals was that these technologies are responsible for a large amount of bird deaths a year. To get an idea of the actual magnitude of this issue, I looked up the top causes for bird deaths globally and was shocked to learn domestic cats are the cause for more bird deaths than all other unnatural causes combined with billions of birds killed by cats each year in the US alone!

With the impact to local wildlife populations in mind (and the fact that indoor cats have a much higher life expectancy than outdoor cats), I finally caved and embraced my inner Austinite and got a cat leash (pictures below - excuse the post storms grass).

Below are some other (ChatGPT generated) reasons to stick to indoor only cats as pets:
    1. Predation on Wildlife: Cats are natural hunters and can significantly reduce the populations of birds, small mammals, reptiles, and insects. This is particularly concerning for native wildlife species that are not adapted to such predators and might be endangered or have declining populations.
    2. Competition with Native Predators: Cats compete with native predators for food resources. By reducing the availability of prey, cats can negatively impact native predator species, altering the local ecological balance.
    3. Disease Transmission: Cats can carry and transmit diseases to wildlife, domestic animals, and humans. Diseases such as toxoplasmosis, feline leukemia, and rabies can be spread by cats to other species, potentially leading to significant health crises in local wildlife populations.
    4. Genetic Impact on Local Species: In some cases, domestic cats can interbreed with wild cat populations, leading to genetic dilution. This can threaten the genetic distinctiveness and viability of native cat species.
    5. Impact on Bird Populations: Birds are particularly vulnerable to predation by cats. The presence of cats can lead to reduced bird populations, especially in urban and suburban areas where habitat loss and human activity have already stressed local bird populations.

Such a beautiful cat! Love the two different colored eyes.
That's a wild fact that domestic cats kill more birds than wind turbines! The more you know...

Took a minute to get outside of the office in this humid Texas weather with @Alessea and walk the pond path near our building. We were able to find and pick-up over 50 pieces of litter just by keeping our eyes scanning for trash! Definitely bringing a grabbing claw and bag next time!

Another 2 members of the Austin "Street Cat" Crew. This cat (not so creatively named "Tailless Void") unfortunately lost his tail in an accident last year, but has been able to make a full recovery and once again hang with his racoon friends!

This Eco Challenge has sparked many conversations around sustainability with my coworkers we would not otherwise have. From this, I have learned that my own teammates and manager don't have the love for our very own native to Texas marsupials I thought they did!

Here are some fun facts about oppossums (and a bonus picture of them enjoying the back porch cat shelter.. which I have yet to have a cat use).

    • Size: Male possums are larger than females, weighing up to 15 pounds and measuring around 28 inches long from head to tail, while females typically weigh no more than eight pounds.
    • Teeth: Opossums have 50 teeth, more than any other mammal in North America.
    • Tails: Opossums have tails that are prehensile (capable of grasping objects) and can be used to help them balance and climb.
    • Natural defenses: Opossums have natural defenses, including immunity to snake venom and rabies.
    • Smart critters: Opossums are smart critters with very sharp memories. They have a relatively small brain, but are able to find food as well as remember where they found it.
    • Pouch: Opossums carry their young in a pouch. A female gives birth twice a year, 13 days after conception, to 5 to 8 babies that remain in her pouch until they're able to walk around on their own by about 4 months of age. Baby opossums are so tiny at birth that 10 can fit in a teaspoon.
    • Activity: Opossums are nocturnal, active mainly after dark.
Hope everyone has an (opp)awesome and sustainable weekend!

      Nope, nope, nope....
Not happening. One literally ate my house in Connecticut. Had to relocate it 10 miles to make sure it didn't come back to have another house snack.

One of our strays, Socks, enjoying some gifts (wet food) from the Easter Bunny! The plastic green box shown is also a DIY winter home shelter (very easy to make and happy to give instructions for next winter)!

As Texas summer rapidly approaches, think of ways you can assist our local animal community stay cool (water, bird baths (treated for mosquitoes), shaded areas, etc.)!
