Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 10 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

According to statistics, Romanians consume almost three times less fish than the European Union average, estimated at 22.5 kg per inhabitant per year, but there are also wide variations between EU countries, depending on tradition. By comparison, Bulgaria and Hungary consume 2.5 to 3 kg of fish a year, while Portugal has the highest fish consumption in the EU at 76 kg a year. In Spain, consumption is 60 kg of fish per year.

    Action Track: Community Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    🍏 Iulia Catanescu 's avatar
    🍏 Iulia Catanescu 4/24/2024 6:52 AM
By absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, trees help to combat climate change. A walk among trees enhances our mood, reduces stress and improves our mental wellbeing. Green spaces encourage more social interaction and a stronger sense of community. Trees help to improve soils and prevent flooding and erosion.

Beyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?

    🍏 Iulia Catanescu 's avatar
    🍏 Iulia Catanescu 4/19/2024 8:48 AM
Yet no matter where we live or who we are in this world, I think forests should be crucial to every one of us. They recycle the air we breathe, and regulate rainfall and climate patterns around the world. Their ecosystem services even include water purification and carbon sequestration (storing carbon).

Did anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?

    🍏 Iulia Catanescu 's avatar
    🍏 Iulia Catanescu 4/08/2024 11:23 PM
I never empty the cooking oil down the sink as it can lead to blockages. What I did not know is that we can let larger amounts of oil to cool and solidify before you scrape it into a waste container and dispose of it in your general waste. I used to collect it in a plastic bottle and try to find location where we can dispose of it.

It's believed that straws take over 500 years to break down. And, if they end up in our waterways and oceans, plastic straws never biodegrade. Instead, they break down into tiny fragments known as microplastics. It will finally become part of our bodies. :(

    🍏 Iulia Catanescu 's avatar
    🍏 Iulia Catanescu 4/03/2024 5:28 AM
So, stepping outside can help you keep a healthy weight or even lose weight by increasing activity levels. Studies have also shown that being in nature has a positive effect on our bodies by reducing cortisol levels, muscle tension, and demands on our cardiovascular systems (lowers heart rate and blood pressure).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

    🍏 Iulia Catanescu 's avatar
    🍏 Iulia Catanescu 4/01/2024 11:01 PM
Some scientists have estimated the average person might eat 5 grams of microplastics in a weekβ€”about the weight of a credit card. Another study breaks that down to up to 52,000 particles annually from various food sources.
I think it is very important that we start living plastic free. Reduce plastic as much as possible, so it will not end up in our waters and soils, and finally in our bodies. A healthy planet has healthy citizens.
