Flavia's actions

Land + Forests

Carry My Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 60 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 24
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 60 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 120 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 60 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Explore My Area
Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

    Flavia Barbu's avatar
    Flavia Barbu 4/26/2024 1:34 AM
I took a walk with some friends to Lacul 3 (Gheorgheni). It's only about 20 minutes away from where I live, which surprised me! I had no idea there was such a beautiful spot so close by. The benefits of being in nature were definitely there. It was a great way to catch up with friends and enjoy some fresh air.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Flavia Barbu's avatar
    Flavia Barbu 4/26/2024 1:30 AM
One area I'm focusing on is reducing my meat consumption. Meat production requires a lot of water, so even small changes can make a difference. I'm also going to be more mindful about food waste because a lot of water gets used to grow food that never gets eaten!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
What did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?

    Flavia Barbu's avatar
    Flavia Barbu 4/26/2024 1:27 AM
One thing that surprised me, thanks to one of my friends, who wants to be a marine biologist, was the vastness of the unexplored ocean. We know more about the surface of Mars than the deep seafloor!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Zero Waste Day
What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

    Flavia Barbu's avatar
    Flavia Barbu 4/23/2024 1:04 AM
Honestly, having a Zero Waste Day wasn't super difficult because I don't buy a ton of stuff. But it did make me think twice about some things. I wanted to order takeout for lunch, but then I remembered all the packaging that comes with it. Deciding to cook instead was a real "aha" moment. It made me realize how often I overlook the waste associated with seemingly convenient choices. This experience definitely made me more conscious of the choices I make. It's not just about the big stuff we buy, but also the everyday things like grabbing a coffee in a disposable cup.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Beyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?

    Flavia Barbu's avatar
    Flavia Barbu 4/23/2024 12:59 AM
Forests have a calming effect. The fresh air, the dappled sunlight, the sounds of nature – it all works together to melt away stress. You return feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle anything.

    Weekend Update:

I went to Iulius Mall this weekend and stumbled upon the amazing vintage market. There was such a great vibe, with people selling all sorts of things - handmade crafts, unique finds, and really interesting vintage items.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Carry My Trash
This is no small task! What was eye-opening to you throughout this action? How will you change your actions going forward to reduce the waste you produce?

    Flavia Barbu's avatar
    Flavia Barbu 4/22/2024 1:08 AM
Carrying my own trash for a while was definitely an eye-opener! It made me much more aware of just how much trash I actually generate throughout the day. Things like water bottles, candy wrappers and even fruit peels – it all adds up quickly.

Here are a few things I'm going to do:
    • Reusable water bottle
    • Mindful shopping: I'll try to be more mindful about what I buy and avoid impulse purchases with excessive packaging.
    • When I'm on the go, I'll pack snacks and drinks from home to avoid grabbing pre-packaged options.

      Nicoleta Lupoaie 4/23/2024 12:25 AM
I realized that small changes in my daily habits can make a significant difference in reducing waste. Going forward, I'm committed to being more mindful of my consumption choices, prioritizing reusable alternatives, and actively seeking out products with minimal packaging. I'll also continue to educate myself and others about the importance of waste reduction and sustainable living practices.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

    Flavia Barbu's avatar
    Flavia Barbu 4/22/2024 1:01 AM
I borrowed a toolbox from a neighbor to hang a mirror and a coat rack in my hallway. There are many benefits to participating in the sharing economy: saves money, reduces waste, connects you with your neighbors - by borrowing and lending things with friends, family, and neighbors, you build trust and a sense of community. It encourages us to see each other as resources and fosters a more collaborative way of living (in my opinion!).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Calculate My Carbon Impact
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Flavia Barbu's avatar
    Flavia Barbu 4/22/2024 12:50 AM
My main areas of carbon footprint are flights and food.

I travel for leisure purposes a decent amount, taking maybe 10-12 flights a year. While I'm conscious and use public transport for everyday errands, those flights add up.

Food-wise, I try to be mindful! I buy "bio" products, but I know they're often transported across Romania, and I don't eat tons of meat, but I do have some every day.

I am willing to make some changes to reduce my footprint! For flights, I'm going to explore trains more for shorter trips within Europe. Maybe for my next vacation, I can choose a destination reachable by train or bus instead of flying. For food, I'm thinking about cutting back on meat a bit, especially red meat like beef. I'll also try to be more mindful about buying local products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests 30 for 30 in Nature
What have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?

    Flavia Barbu's avatar
    Flavia Barbu 4/12/2024 6:10 AM
When I spend time outside regularly, I definitely notice a positive shift in how I feel. For example, the other day I read a book for a few hours in the park by my apartment, and it was just really nice. Being outside seemed to clear my head and make me feel more relaxed, even in the middle of the city.
