Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 60 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 60 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 24 hours in my community.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 5 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Freshwater + Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and MeWhat did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?
Ionut Cadar 4/18/2024 10:17 PMRegenerative agriculture strives to limit chemical, physical and biological disturbance, keep the soil covered, add diversity of plants and insects, keep a living root in the ground as long as possible and integrate animals into your system. We can support healthy farming practices by learning them first and sharing them with our families friends and other members of our community.-
Nicoleta Lupoaie 4/19/2024 12:59 AMRegenerative agriculture is a holistic approach to farming that focuses on rebuilding and restoring soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience. It goes beyond sustainable farming by actively improving the land over time. Here's what I've learned about its practice and benefits:
1. **Soil Health**: Regenerative agriculture prioritizes soil health through practices like minimal tillage, cover cropping, and crop rotation. This enhances soil structure, fertility, and water retention, leading to increased yields and carbon sequestration.
2. **Biodiversity**: By encouraging diverse plant species and wildlife habitat, regenerative farming fosters a more resilient ecosystem. This helps in pest management, reduces the need for chemical inputs, and promotes natural pollination.
3. **Carbon Sequestration**: Healthy soils act as a carbon sink, pulling carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in the soil. Practices such as no-till farming and the use of cover crops can significantly enhance carbon sequestration, mitigating climate change.
4. **Water Management**: Regenerative agriculture practices help improve water infiltration and reduce erosion, leading to more efficient water use and reduced runoff, which can help prevent water pollution.
5. **Economic Resilience**: While there may be an initial learning curve and investment required for farmers transitioning to regenerative practices, over time it can lead to cost savings through reduced inputs and increased resilience to extreme weather events.
To support healthy farming practices for people and the planet, individuals and organizations can:
1. **Educate**: Raise awareness about the benefits of regenerative agriculture among farmers, consumers, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
2. **Advocate**: Support policies that incentivize and promote regenerative farming practices, such as subsidies for conservation programs or carbon farming initiatives.
3. **Invest**: Direct investment towards regenerative agriculture projects and initiatives, including supporting farmers transitioning to regenerative practices or investing in companies that prioritize sustainability.
4. **Consumer Choices**: Choose products from farms that practice regenerative agriculture, such as those with organic or regenerative certifications, to support sustainable farming methods.
5. **Research and Innovation**: Support research into regenerative agriculture techniques and technologies that can further enhance its effectiveness and scalability.
By collectively supporting regenerative agriculture, we can contribute to a more sustainable and resilient food system for future generations. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Endangered SpeciesWhat endangered species did you learn about and what did you learn?
Ionut Cadar 4/17/2024 11:49 PMI think the list is already outdated. I know about rhinoceros and amur leopards for a long time now. I am also trying as hard as I can to avoid eating products containing palm oil because of the orangutan population threat these cultures pose. Sadly enough, it is mostly because of human intervention that these species are in this situation to begin with.-
Nicoleta Lupoaie 4/23/2024 12:12 AMVarious species of sea turtles, including the loggerhead, leatherback, and hawksbill turtles, are listed as endangered or critically endangered due to threats such as habitat destruction, pollution, bycatch in fishing gear, and poaching for their eggs, meat, and shells.

Ionut Cadar 4/17/2024 6:08 AMCamelia Gui presented Food Waste material which was very interesting to me. We used story telling exercises, quizzes and a lot of links and slides. I found a lot of interesting details about food use but also about preserving it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and PaperBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Ionut Cadar 4/16/2024 11:10 PMI always feel recharge when walking or running in forests. I have been picking berries and wild mushrooms in my childhood which made me realize how much more forests give back to us and how important it is to conserve them and grow new ones. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Invest in NatureWhat did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?
Ionut Cadar 4/16/2024 2:56 AMI'm trying to invest in ethical and climate friendly companies so I was looking to find out more details about this. Actually, my biggest dream is to create a social business. Having said that I really enjoyed the content provided by this challenge and it sparked some interest I intend to follow.-
Nicoleta Lupoaie 4/23/2024 12:14 AMInvesting can support the environment and create a more sustainable world by channeling capital towards companies and projects that prioritize environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Through impact investing, ESG integration, renewable energy investments, sustainable infrastructure projects, engagement and advocacy, and divestment from fossil fuels, investors can drive positive environmental outcomes while generating financial returns. By aligning investment decisions with sustainability goals, investors play a crucial role in advancing environmental protection and promoting a transition to a more sustainable economy. -
