It was awesome seeing so many LS/CO partners yesterday at the GMOG event at Three Square. Together we created 6700+ bags that will be delivered to school aged kids throughout the Las Vegas area. Being part of an engaging community helps to build a sense of belonging and fill your cup.

Had a great time volunteering at Three Squares in support of the Feeding America Program for GMOG! Partnered with LS/CO partners at the event. We managed to put together over 6,700 lunches for kids in the community! Not only a wonderful way to support the community, but a great time with fellow partners!

Land + Forests Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Beyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?

It's always nice to purchase items that are eco-friendly. But before I buy a new eco-friendly item, I will continue to look for natural wood items that need a second life! Making more cognizant purchases like this feels good and is the right thing to do!

I'm taking the Eco Challenge to Oregon with me! Maybe I will do my trash collection on the beach each morning with my grandbabies.

Freshwater + Oceans Learn About Water Justice in My Area
Who is affected by polluted water or a lack of access to water in your region? How are they affected?

This is a constant sore spot for everyone who lives in Vegas right now. We share our water with CA and AZ and the battle continues to forge ahead on how we are addressing the water shortage. Initial discussions talked about desalinization but that strayed due to effects on the oceans, next option that is being discussed is doing a main pipeline up through Mexico. That intrigues me as to how it will occur but I think that if the city/state are going to continue to increase both commercial and residential builds, additional water restrictions will need to be created.

    Biodiversity + Wildlife Endangered Species
What endangered species did you learn about and what did you learn?

My goal was to learn about an animal on the "Critically Endangered List" and I chose the Sumatran Elephant. Sumatran elephants feed on a variety of plants and deposit seeds wherever they go, contributing to a healthy forest ecosystem. They also share their lush forest habitat with several other endangered species, such as the Sumatran rhino, tiger, and orangutan, and countless other species that all benefit from an elephant population that thrives in a healthy habitat.

Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

This was definitely a challenge for me but it was a thought provoking day which has now been a 3 week streak. I learned that I do not have to always have what I want but what I need instead, it's cut down on waste and I also have started to repurpose what I have to get the end result of what I wanted initially. A perfect example is that I wanted new plant coasters to protect my deck flooring, what I found is that I can take the straw matting from my old plant hangers and turn them into the perfect fit for each plant, not only are they natural fibers but they are waterproof and can be reused!

How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

Coming form California this was pretty easy as non-reusable bags there cost 10c so I started this habit before moving to Vegas and have kept up with it since. Shout out to IKEA they have HUGE bags that are great for hauling groceries and other large items :)
