Catherine's actions

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 21
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 21
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Biodiversity and Me

I will spend at least 15 minutes each day researching what biodiversity is, how biodiversity positively impacts our world, and how the loss of biodiversity harms it. I will share what I learn on the feed.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

Had a great time volunteering at Three Squares in support of the Feeding America Program for GMOG! Partnered with LS/CO partners at the event. We managed to put together over 6,700 lunches for kids in the community! Not only a wonderful way to support the community, but a great time with fellow partners!

Beyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?

It's always nice to purchase items that are eco-friendly. But before I buy a new eco-friendly item, I will continue to look for natural wood items that need a second life! Making more cognizant purchases like this feels good and is the right thing to do!

As part of GMOG I will be volunteering with my peers at Three Squares as part of the Feeding America support programs! This is not the first time we have volunteered at this amazing organization! Not only does my time help the organization, but I am also able to bond more with my peers and meet new partners!

I must say...doing these daily check-ins really keep me cognizant of what I do (or do not do) in regards to being eco-friendly!

With the summer heat coming, all of our blinds and drapes stay closed during the day (even if we are home) and ceiling fans are ON! This actually helps to not put as much stress onto our AC units during the hot days.

that small action helps the indoor temps so much.....I am trying to not flip on the AC until we are steadily into the 90 degree range. Having doors and windows open at night when it cools off is great too!

We and my parents do the same thing in our home. It really does make a difference.

For those of you who live in Southern Nevada, did you know there are convenient locations to drop off paint and other household hazardous items? Republic service has a calendar sharing locations and dates on when/where this service is available. As you declutter your home/garage...place these items off to the side so you can make one trip!

I have so much paint in my garage. I need to do this soon.

Getting ready to do some landscaping! Replacing all of our grass with desert landscaping! Great way to beautify our yard while saving water!

My husband and I are remodeling our kitchen. Instead of demoing all of the cabinets (which would have been the easy thing to do) we carefully removed them so they were not damaged and reached out to friends to see if anyone one wanted them. We were able to give them to another friend who had been looking for some cabinets for his work garage! Giving a second life to these cabinets was a great feeling!

I've been collecting more reusable bags. I leave them in my car, my husband's car, and been getting my parents and other family members to also participate. Having them easily accessible is the key to actually using them. Building a habit of putting them back in the car, once you have taken your purchased items into the house, is key to ensuring you are ready for your next (and sometimes unexpected) trips to the store. I noticed by having some "extra" in the car, I help myself, in the event I forget to take the used bags back into my car. Yay!

Love this. I buy reusable bags whenever I explore a new city and carry them in all cars just so i can avoid getting plastic bags.

As the treasurer of our PPN I take lead on purchasing swag for our partners. One of the suggestions was sunglasses, as this time of year a lot of outdoor volunteer events are happening. I did some research, not only did I find the sunglasses, but i was able to find some that were made from recycled plastics! Supporting eye protection outside and being environmentally responsible at the same time!
