I had two goals for Earth Month and am well on my way to meeting them! One goal centered around planting trees. This month I have planted two cold weather palm trees, an olive tree and two columnar apple trees in my yard. My hopes with the apple trees will be to bring in something for the bees to feed on, and my neighbor planted two as well so lets get cross-pollinating! Hoping for some apples this in the late Spring of next year! My second goal was to plant a small garden. Planning for that is underway and will be happening in the next few weeks. Glad to have some motivation in these areas, so thank you Banu for your leadership in this EcoChallenge 2024!

How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

On Sunday, I planted 9 trees and two shrubs! Well, actually, my son did all the planting - and I "supervised & gave encouragement!" We planted 3 Douglas Fir, 2 Vine Maples, 2 Cherry Trees, 1 Birch, and 1 Giant Sequoia, plus 2 lilac bushes! It rained when we were done so they were well- watered too. Some of them look like little sticks now, but they have big dreams to grow tall and lush.
Planting trees is very rewarding for yourself and for the environment. Knowing that something you planted is going to live far beyond your years is very satisfying and cultivates a connection to the world around you!

Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

I did some research and it looks like the world is using approximately 1.5 billion water bottles a day!! This is a lot of plastic. We probably can not reduce it all, but if we are able to use ceramic cups or metal reusable mugs, we can sure contribute to lessen the need for such an incredible production.

I went to the lake to hang up my little sign and came away with a big bag of trash (mostly recyclables). This is a very small lake and there are no facilities or trash cans, so I think it's something I'll keep checking in on - and picking things up, if necessary!

Sharing about the environment is the greatest gift we can give our grandson but seeing it through his eyes and curiosity is great but doing something is even more rewarding for our future.

Sharing about our environment with our grandson is a start. Just talking about nature, the plants and seeing it through his eyes and curiosity is the right approach for anyone but doing something is the greater impact.

We planted a locally sourced Queens Apple Tree for our almost 2 year old Grandson in honor of his upcoming birthday and Earth Day! He’s a lover of apples 🍎 and being outside.

Community can only truly be a community when everyone is involved in a common cause. Volunteering allows you to see fruits of your labor and unites you with your neighbors.

Freshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I don't use straws or single-use coffee cups, but I do use water in plastic bottles sometimes. I am trying to make sure not to forget to bring my reusable mug with me when I go places.
