Katerina's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Grow Local
I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Katerina Kuznetsova 4/24/2024 10:37 AMI did some research and it looks like the world is using approximately 1.5 billion water bottles a day!! This is a lot of plastic. We probably can not reduce it all, but if we are able to use ceramic cups or metal reusable mugs, we can sure contribute to lessen the need for such an incredible production.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Katerina Kuznetsova 4/21/2024 2:32 PMCommunity can only truly be a community when everyone is involved in a common cause. Volunteering allows you to see fruits of your labor and unites you with your neighbors. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Katerina Kuznetsova 4/19/2024 5:07 PMI don't use straws or single-use coffee cups, but I do use water in plastic bottles sometimes. I am trying to make sure not to forget to bring my reusable mug with me when I go places. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Grow LocalHow did it feel to plant something native in your area to support local wildlife and biodiversity? What did you plant? Please consider adding a photo.
Katerina Kuznetsova 4/12/2024 8:36 AMWe planted Pacific Silver fir. It does grow slowly but would be a replacement for the trees that had to be cut in our greenbelt because of the decease. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Katerina Kuznetsova 4/11/2024 5:11 PMI have multiple bulb flowers in my garden that are starting to blossom. And here come the bees. I was actually surprised to see them since it has still been relatively cold. We are planning to start planting peas, string beans, cucumbers and tomatoes soon. You cannot have cucumbers without pollination, so always thankful for the bees. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Katerina Kuznetsova 4/11/2024 5:03 PMI have learned that On 14 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution at its seventy-seventh session to proclaim 30 March as International Day of Zero Waste, to be observed annually.
Having a Zero waste day is challenging, as you have to really plan your meals. Using composting really helps. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Katerina Kuznetsova 4/07/2024 9:57 PMMy house is surrounded by greenbelts but sometimes trees need to be cut when they deceased. Planting new trees to replace the old helps to keep our environment clean and fresh. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Katerina Kuznetsova 4/07/2024 9:55 PMnon-woven plastic bags that feel like cloth are also made of plastics; sometimes tea bags are from plastic too. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Katerina Kuznetsova 4/07/2024 9:52 PMWalks are very therapeutic. It helps to clear the mind and enjoy the scenery. -
