Redbuds are now in place at my home to offer bees an early pollination opportunity right after winter. Also, multiple sub species of Viburnums are now in place at my home / farm to attract bees.

Biodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable Bags
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

It is difficult to go to the store and remember your reusable bags. I am starting to see some exchange programs with the bags that are super helpful. This type of behavior (returning them and reusing them) is where we need to go as a society in the US in my opinion.

The biodiversity webinar was amazing. It is so humbling to hear the intricate connectivity of every species on Earth and how they affect our ecosystem. It is our job to be responsible with our resources to ensure our planet thrives. Let's protect what can't be undone. Think globally, act locally.

    Land + Forests Forest-Friendly Foods
What did you learn about forest-friendly foods? How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

Learning about forest-friendly foods helped me realize the significant impact that agriculture, particularly certain types of farming practices like deforestation for livestock grazing or palm oil production, can have on forests worldwide. It highlighted the importance of making informed choices about the foods we consume to reduce our ecological footprint. While the concept of forest-friendly foods aligns with my values of environmental conservation, transitioning to a diet that prioritizes these foods posed some challenges. It required breaking away from familiar dietary habits and being more mindful of food choices, ingredients, and sourcing practices. Additionally, access to forest-friendly options was challenging in our rural area it some situations, making it necessary to seek out alternative suppliers or adjust meal planning accordingly. Despite the initial challenges, making changes to incorporate more forest-friendly foods into my diet has been a rewarding journey. Each step towards choosing sustainable and eco-friendly options feels like a positive contribution towards protecting forests and biodiversity.

Picking up litter often attracts attention from passersby or other community members, leading to positive social interactions and conversations. These interactions provide opportunities to connect with others who share your commitment to improving the community, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support.

This spring, we were able to plant flowering species that attract bees. Bees are more than just small honey collectors: They are crucial for biodiversity and health all over the world. Together with other insects, they are responsible for plant pollination, which ensures the survival and diversity of food crops and medicinal plants.
As pollinators visit flowers to drink nectar or feed on pollen, they move pollen from flower to flower and help plants reproduce. Pollination is an ecological service -- a role an organism plays in its ecosystem that is essential to human life . Bees are some of the most important crop pollinators.

Planting trees provides a break from the office environment and restores our connection to nature. It benefits our planet and gives us a sense of purpose bigger than ourselves.

Biodiversity + Wildlife Leave No Trace
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

Leave no trace is a universal concept that we should all embrace. When enjoying the splendor and amazing opportunities that nature provides, take action and influence others not to litter, restore the area to the state in which you found it, or better than you found it! Remember the saying, think globally, act locally.

I joined to learn more about eco-friendly practices and to challenge myself to adopt new habits that promote sustainability. I selected actions my family could do together - like looking for opportunities to reduce single use plastics and find products that don't use palm oil.
