Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Land + Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Forest-Friendly FoodsWhat did you learn about forest-friendly foods? How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Kristin Bezemek 4/26/2024 7:54 AMLearning about forest-friendly foods helped me realize the significant impact that agriculture, particularly certain types of farming practices like deforestation for livestock grazing or palm oil production, can have on forests worldwide. It highlighted the importance of making informed choices about the foods we consume to reduce our ecological footprint. While the concept of forest-friendly foods aligns with my values of environmental conservation, transitioning to a diet that prioritizes these foods posed some challenges. It required breaking away from familiar dietary habits and being more mindful of food choices, ingredients, and sourcing practices. Additionally, access to forest-friendly options was challenging in our rural area it some situations, making it necessary to seek out alternative suppliers or adjust meal planning accordingly. Despite the initial challenges, making changes to incorporate more forest-friendly foods into my diet has been a rewarding journey. Each step towards choosing sustainable and eco-friendly options feels like a positive contribution towards protecting forests and biodiversity. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Kristin Bezemek 4/26/2024 7:52 AMPicking up litter often attracts attention from passersby or other community members, leading to positive social interactions and conversations. These interactions provide opportunities to connect with others who share your commitment to improving the community, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support. -
Kristin Bezemek 4/04/2024 6:04 AMI joined to learn more about eco-friendly practices and to challenge myself to adopt new habits that promote sustainability. I selected actions my family could do together - like looking for opportunities to reduce single use plastics and find products that don't use palm oil. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Kristin Bezemek 4/01/2024 6:03 AMCleaning out my pantry this weekend one of the most surprising places where plastic showed up in my life during this challenge was in my kitchen and food packaging. Despite my efforts to reduce single-use plastic, I was shocked to find how much plastic was still present in the packaging of everyday food items. Even shopping at "healthier" stores like Trader Joes results in so much plastic packaging. We are going to avoid single serve packets for condiments and snacks and focus on buying more food in bulk. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Consume only Needs vs WantsConsuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?
Kristin Bezemek 4/01/2024 5:58 AMTo increase the motivation, we are going to combine this with a no spend month and use the savings towards a future family trip. I am becoming more aware of the difference between genuine needs and fleeting wants, and I've realized that often, my desires are driven more by societal pressures or emotional needs than actual necessity. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Kristin Bezemek 4/01/2024 5:56 AMAlready owning reusable produce bags made it easy to avoid single use plastic during my grocery pickup.
