  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community and Connection
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

I made donations to thrift establishments who help the homeless and/or handicapped. I also purchased books for youth to add to a couple of the little libraries in my area. I had discussions about my wasted time with a couple of my friends. They would never frequent these places. They also see volunteerism as a waste of time. One of them actually had to volunteer for a church project. She had an interesting take on her whole experience.

I take older people places. Grocery store, appointments, church. It's easy to see myself needing help in the future. Some of these folks show me how to age gracefully and accept help. I also practice Random acts of kindness at the zoo. That's helping people find their way, advise people with wheels the best way to avoid stairs, and take pictures so everyone can be in the picture. I had a stressful social work job previously, so seeing families have fun together is very rewarding to see.

Serving platter and planter to start seeds. All of these items were recycled items I had at home. No need to spend money on something I could use.

Exercise including stretching is good. Helps with overall wellbeing. I don't push it, but I feel so much better. "Me taking care of Me"

The largest water foot print is from eat eating. We will try to have one meatless day/week. We often have only 1 meat meal /day.

I replaced my all purpose cleaner with vinegar. I replaced my laundry detergent with Canadian made sheets.

How did keeping your community more clean connect you more to your local area? Did picking up litter change your perspective on the cleanliness of your community?

Lots of construction in park, low # of people so have to walk farther to get stuff to pick up. Interesting dynamic. Met more people on wider route! Also handed out some paper recyclable doggie poop bags. People didn't kow that they were available!

What did you enjoy or learn from attending a local event in your community? How did participating in this event deepen your connection to your local area?

Unfortunately, this event had low attendance so that brought some disappointment. It was an effort to build community and I had hoped for more. I feel it's quite representative of today's society, and that worries me. Isolationism causes such a roadblock to progress, whether that be environmentalism, equal representation, reproductive rights, etc.

I joined up later than I had from previously years. I feel with all that is going with local and federal politics people focused isn't on the environment, local communities, volunteerism, health and education.

I led a workshop to train others how to conduct a citizen science project for monarch butterflies. Not only will the data they submit broaden what's available for scientists and policy makers, but each individual will feel good doing it. Monarchs have a connection to many, whether spiritually or otherwise, so helping them help the butterflies makes them happy and feel like they're doing something about a problem (low population, habitat destruction). That in turn extends my reach and brings me happiness too!

I participated in the City Nature Challenge on April 27. There were a few technical glitches, but it went pretty well.
