Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

I had a new plastic experience today at work. Our zoo was used as a prom venue yesterday. I picked up a handful of sequins from the ground and many appeared to contain plastic! Yet another plastic thing that escaped my everyday awareness. I never thought to examine adornments on my clothing. Upon inspection, several of my coats and jackets have plastic zippers and logos. Eye-opening!

Plastics are hidden in labeling. 100% natural items or plastic free items have plastic in them.

I met my friend and we picked up 5+ garbage bags of crap under a bridge on one of our streets. (She'd been tossing it over.) Sadly, due to the system limitations here, I could only claim 100. I was covered with mud, but happy with the results. A local restaurant let us add to their dumpster.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I have been struggling to use "reusable/washable" bags for groceries. When I wash them, they won't stand up and cashiers are not keen to use them. One went so far as to fold it an put it into plastic. Ironically some bags came with a plastic "bottom" that I have used with many bags. Is it better to buy bags that have plastic bottoms in them or go back to plastic?

On my way to physical therapy each day I see a person at a bus stop and she is kicking around plastic bottles etc. into the street. I took a minute to speak with her on Monday and now I try to plan extra time to meet her and fill up a bag. I'm thinking 10-15 minutes well spent, and I have a new friend.
