It's the last day of the ecochallenge month.

Honestly, I could have done better. Obviously, I am not nearly as hydrated as I should be. I walked and bussed a lot, but Bertha rarely was taken out for a spin. There were days I was caught without enough reusable bags, so I had to get a couple from the store.

    But.

I didn't too shabby for the circumstances I am currently in and all that jazz. And I have room for improvement. Next year I'm not going to tell the ecochallenge categories that I already bus and bike everywhere because while I know I do it often, I'd like to track (even for only one month) how many times I ride the bus or my bike.

I'll probably still be dehydrated next year, though (I love me my Mt. Dew too much!)!!!

As most people, I have a "bag of bags" from the grocery/convenience/gas station store. We've been folding then rolling them up to take up less space. Well, I did my big grocery shop (using my reusable bags) and when I got home, I grabbed some of the little rolls and rebagged my groceries to see how many I saved.

THIS WAS JUST A WEEKLY SHOP!

But, because it was some heavy cans, a jar of pasta sauce... Keep the refrigerated items in a group...

It was over the 10 bags saved that I could claim. I technically fit everything in a foldable box (it's a reusable bag that is sturdier), 2 average shopping totes, and a small shopping tote. I could have ditched the small shopping tote, but I bought bread and didn't want to squish it.

The me of about a decade ago would likely have been a bit embarrassed because I used a small foldable dolly to stack the box and totes on to get on and off the bus, but then I think back to in the early Aughts, when I'd be on public transit with over a dozen plastic grocery bags taking up so much room, and I'm embarrassed for her, that she would rather cut off the circulation to her fingers than have some sort of personal cart. Or using the car to go 4 blocks to the grocery store because I was hankering something, and didn't do a full grocery shop, just grab a couple of small things.

It's going well. Nature is in my every thought, and I like these platforms that help us appreciate our home.

Land + Forests Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

I think it makes a difference when others see you picking up trash by their houses and you can start a conversation with them. I walk my dog twice a day so I pick up litter on our walks.

Climate + Air Calculate My Carbon Impact
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

I'm really glad I don't eat beef or lamb but there is still so much more that can be done. I will plan to set up our rain barrel this summer, consider asking for environmentally friendly ubers/lyfts, and consider getting a hybrid car for our next vehicle.

Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

When thinking about water consumption, I mostly just think about how much water we use in our household. It was super interesting to calculate how much water my diet consumes.

Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

I just discovered that there is a Zero-Waste Refilling Station in Downtown, Squirrel Hill, and Oakmont (https://www.therefillerypgh.com/) where you can bring in your own container of any kind and fill it with green cleaning for your home and/or business (hand soap, dish soap, all-purpose cleaners, etc.). It is an awesome store that is preventing containers from going to the landfill and chemicals going into our water systems and environment.
