Annie's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Annie Nagy 4/25/2024 4:48 AMI think it makes a difference when others see you picking up trash by their houses and you can start a conversation with them. I walk my dog twice a day so I pick up litter on our walks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Calculate My Carbon ImpactWhere in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?
Annie Nagy 4/24/2024 11:19 AMI'm really glad I don't eat beef or lamb but there is still so much more that can be done. I will plan to set up our rain barrel this summer, consider asking for environmentally friendly ubers/lyfts, and consider getting a hybrid car for our next vehicle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Annie Nagy 4/24/2024 10:36 AMWhen thinking about water consumption, I mostly just think about how much water we use in our household. It was super interesting to calculate how much water my diet consumes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in CleaningWhat did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?
Annie Nagy 4/24/2024 8:14 AMI just discovered that there is a Zero-Waste Refilling Station in Downtown, Squirrel Hill, and Oakmont (https://www.therefillerypgh.com/) where you can bring in your own container of any kind and fill it with green cleaning for your home and/or business (hand soap, dish soap, all-purpose cleaners, etc.). It is an awesome store that is preventing containers from going to the landfill and chemicals going into our water systems and environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Annie Nagy 4/22/2024 12:41 PMDuring my lunch break I often take the same walking route when I'm working in the Hill District. I explored another part of the neighborhood and really enjoyed walking down different streets and passing new neighbors. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil DisposalDid anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?
Annie Nagy 4/22/2024 8:10 AMI didn't realize that cleaned and reused oil can remain the fridge for up to 30 days and be used multiple times. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Reduce Animal ProductsHow does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Annie Nagy 4/18/2024 12:17 PMI learned how large the carbon footprint is for beef, lamb, and shellfish. I never thought about how farmed raised shrimp results in the cutting down of natural mangroves and the release of stored carbon. Also, that what you eat has a much larger impact on the environment compared to the transport and packing of the food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Annie Nagy 4/11/2024 5:55 AMI have bee friendly flowers and plants seeds ready to go in my garden this year. I'm also in the process of making a bee hotel which I plan to hang from my cherry tree this weekend. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
Annie Nagy 4/11/2024 5:52 AMI wasn't surprised by lamb and beef being creating a large carbon footprint, but I didn't think further how cheese and yogurt also contribute to high carbon emissions.
