Peter's actions

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR

On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 20 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

So I'm trying to reduce our Carbon foot print and I found inspiration in this read here. Probably late to the party :-)
Some is easy and some is harder.
Living Zero Waste: 7 Common Mistakes to Avoid In 2022 (unsustainablemagazine.com)

I copied the checklist and I have actually checked of some of them, but I could use ideas and inspiration from the network for some of them. So here is what I'm working on (for some of them it is a confession)
Nr 4, do some one has a tip on how to do this ?
Nr 9. I'm investigating this, if you have tips, please let me know
Nr 11. This one means that the settings I have need to be set everytime I plug them in again. Also, how about charging overnight? You could say I really enjoy the charging, hassle free tech and power sleep mode..
Nr 12. My process is always to go cheap to understand if it is compatible for me and then for quality. Like now, I have bought a cheap gym and possibly under the Moto bike Helmet headset (bone conduct). In some cases I can skip this step, but for most things I do this.
    - The best bone conduction headphones 2024 | TechRadar
Nr 13. This need to be tested, I had it before, with no success. Cost a lot of money and the rechargable batteries seems to have limited life span. Do anyone have this and an recommend a tech (batteries)/supplier/model that is good ?
    I found this one,

Nr 14. I need to check this out, and put it in our DNA, to check this first if applicable.

    My checklist
Here are a few ideas on what you can start doing at home to start living zero waste:
    1. Consume less – If you don’t need it, don’t buy it (OH YES !)
    2. Start a backyard compost. (sort of, we have a compost for the area)
    3. Use reusable cups, bags and cutleries (stainless steel straws etc.) (Yes)
    4. Buy food without packaging. (really hard)
    5. Use LED light bulbs in your home. (Yes)
    6. Reuse old towels and sheets (YES)
    7. Go paperless for your bills. (YES)
    8. Plan your daily meals for the week to avoid waste (YES)
    9. Use bar soaps and shampoo bars (need to be investigated)
    10. Turn off the water when brushing your teeth. (YES, and shaving)
    11. Unplug electronics when they’re not in use (charging an issue)
    12. Buy quality items that can last long. (I buy cheap to test normally, then I go for quality)
    13. Use rechargeable batteries (Help)
    14. Head to your nearest thrift shop for clothes and furniture ( I need to explore)
    15. Shop at your local farmer’s market (Shopping every where)

many thanks in advance for any tips and trix and I hope I inspired :-)

Yesterday I posted within IT an improvement about a possible energy saver for Emerson.
It targets all pc's that is on 24/7 for no reason.
If successful, all targeted pc's should be shut down automatically after business hours and started at start of the business day. I want to thank Roger Williman and the A2006 team to help me to get this far.
