Michelle 's actions
Land + Forests
Removing Invasive Species- Garlic Mustard
I have spent the last 3-4 years pulling garlic mustard from my property. The first year, it was over 40 large garbage bags full. It's an endless battle, but you can certainly see the difference on my land. The neighbors property is my next target.
Action Track: Community
Networking with like minded neighbors to learn and share
I just found out about a neighbor that is also quite heavy into sustainability and nurturing the land. Plan to get together Saturday for the first time to chat about what they do, what we do, and what we can maybe accomplish together.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Grow Local
I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 60 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 5 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Michelle Wallen 4/24/2024 8:29 AMThis was year 1 of pulling highly invasive garlic mustard on my property, and this was only part of what we pulled in 2021. The seed bank can be 7+ years and each plant can release THOUSANDS of seeds. Back at it this year again.
-
Jeff Wawrzeniak 4/24/2024 8:44 AMPeppermint and some ivy is in different areas in my yard. As long as its not overly invasive, we let it go as it smells nice and they flower for the majority of the season.

Michelle Wallen 4/23/2024 2:07 PMMet a coworker today for lunch and discussed composting, winter sown native plants, invasive species, etc. We also talked about Furball Farm Cat Sanctuary, which has nothing to do with this challenge, but they are an amazing place, so it's worth mentioning :-) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Michelle Wallen 4/19/2024 10:25 AMI frequently walk around my work campus (Sullivan Park). Lots of pretty areas to explore. It helps me relax and reconnect with what's really important to me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Michelle Wallen 4/19/2024 10:24 AMI've been planting native plants and flowers for the last couple of years. This past weekend, we planted a few more. I have a ton of winter sown seedlings currently-- hopefully most survive and we will be extremely busy transplanting. All native. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Michelle Wallen 4/19/2024 10:22 AMWe are currently setting up a rain garden to make use of water run-off. We also need to start a water capture system (rain barrel or something) but haven't done this yet. We are also trying to divert water that comes down from the hill away from the house and towards our flower gardens. Trying to divert water is quite challenging! It wants to go where it wants to go! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and MeWhat did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?
Michelle Wallen 4/04/2024 1:57 PMMuch more research to do here! I did find a group (CADE- center for agricultural development) that has a vision plan for NY by 2050. Looks to be more central NY. Also found Cornell Small Farms Program and some interesting classes available. Beekeeping and building high tunnel gardens were particularly interesting to me. MORE to come. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Michelle Wallen 4/03/2024 9:46 AMPicked up 5 more trees native to my area and will be planting this weekend, assuming the weather cooperates!-
Michelle Wallen 4/12/2024 7:04 AMThere is a native tree and flower place in Canandaigua NY called White Oak Nursery that we get trees from. Last year we got 10 or so. I've tried Arbor Day trees with almost no success (3 of 50 made it). highly recommend finding a local source where trees and native flowers are grown so they are already used to the climate they will be in. There's a wonderful native flower nursery (Amanda's Garden) out by Dansville NY. -
Emilee Lindner 4/04/2024 6:01 PMWhat are they? And where did you get them? -
Jeff Herrera 4/03/2024 5:45 PMHoping the weather cooperates Michelle! Share a photo if you can

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Michelle Wallen 4/03/2024 8:30 AMWhile my water footprint was less than average (1259gal/day vs 1802gal/day), it's still pretty shocking to realize how large it is. Definitely got some ideas now on ways to reduce further. Really enjoying this ecochallenge!-
Michelle Wallen 4/12/2024 7:06 AMOne thing we don't do currently is capture water runoff from the house, etc. We need to get some rainbarrels (been on the list but just haven't done) so that we can use that versus watering with a hose when things need a little help. -
Jeff Herrera 4/03/2024 5:46 PMWould like to hear what you are thinking about doing to reduce. I’ll share my consumption after I’ve done this exercise.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Choose Renewable EnergyIf you are already signed up for your utility's renewable option, what other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If your company doesn't offer a renewable option, were they open to your request of this in the future?
Michelle Wallen 4/03/2024 6:57 AMWe currently get some solar through the program Corning had (has?) with Common Energy- haven't heard much about them in a while, so don't know if Corning still promotes that effort or not. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Michelle Wallen 4/03/2024 6:55 AMTook a short walk down my road and picked up trash- mostly beer cans! 5 cents each, for the local animal shelter, so double the benefit.
