Jeff's actions

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Forest-Friendly Foods

I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

Did anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?

I would say I use more oil than I want to now that I have taken more time to learn about the long-term, additive effects of oils entering the water supply. It’s like creating mini oil spills on water ecosystems over time. I knew that pouring oil down the drain clogs pipes, but learning about “fatbergs” dissuades me even more from wanting to put any oil down the drain. I’m going to be reusing oil more when I can and looking into oil recycling in my area. Does anyone have tips on oil reuse and storage?

Ooo, this is an interesting question to answer with the upcoming eclipse. Because my area is in path of totality, we are planning (or rather bracing) ourselves for a major influx of eclipse viewers. Side bar: how neat that we still have so many people getting excited to this level for a natural phenomenon; there’s hope that we have not lost our fascination with the beauty of nature. With the influx, one of the things my area is anticipating is a potential strain on our water systems - which will probably translate into people stocking up on water, and likely excess plastic consumption/waste (oof)… but what could we be doing to be more mindful about all of this?! For one, rather than sending notices to our population already in the area, I hope we will be strongly advising visitors to be water conscious and not excessively use water. To fully enjoy the phenomenon, let’s not take our water system for granted! Flush only when needed, shower instead of bathe and limit time (get clean quick!), don’t run faucets more than needed, maybe close car washes for the day, or even put city restrictions on sprinkler systems, etc. There’s so much we could and hopefully will be doing to take productive measures before and during the event, rather than just posturing for the worst. I think I’ll also try to turn this situation into another positive teaching moment about water conservation for my kids - in addition to them experiencing an eclipse 😊

Action Track: Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Jeff Herrera's avatar
    Jeff Herrera 4/03/2024 5:44 PM
I feel like collecting litter connects us to our communities by instilling a sense of ownership through cleaning and beautifying, just like we get when we clean our homes. Also, we can get more intimately familiar by exploring while we clean. Anyone else have thoughts on this? Would like to hear other perspectives 😊

I feel the same way. I go out with a garbage picker on my road. I take my daughter and we pretend we're Jack & Jill and we hop in and out of ditches. We've started to learn about certain rocks and where the water falls and where daffodils grow. We've become intimate with the few yards in front of our house that we may have otherwise passed off as "ditch." But that space is our little ecosystem! I feel so much more connected to our environment and neighborhood by taking care of it and I love being able to practice my love language (acts of service) for my neighbors.
