Dorothea's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.

DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

    Dorothea Sypien's avatar
    Dorothea Sypien 4/30/2024 12:57 AM
I can't really wrap my head around how careless we have become with generating things that are harmful for our nature and ourselves in the short or long run.
Today it's plastics, yesterday I heard of another substance, that's counted among "forever chemicals" (PFAS) that we created and that will never ever disappear. And we use them just as lightheartedly as plastics.
We consider nuclear power a "green energy" because it produces less carbon emissions. But what about the hazardous trash it produces that we need to store somewhere and that pollutes it's surroundings? I strongly believe we should consider that for "green" choices as well.

I feel we act way to careless and selfish, when it comes to our environment.

I try to reduce plastics as much as I can in my daily use. I take shopping bags with me, use lunch boxes, have a soda stream at home, use refillable soaps or even shampoo bars.

Every little steps counts and if we all start small, we will still make a big movement. Just like the ripples become bigger, when you throw a rock into the water.

Thank you all for making our world a better place!

Since I became a mother, I care even more about caring for our environment. I want my son to have a healthy place to grow up in.

We're out and about quite often and I teach him good habits by setting examples. We're taking reusable bottles and boxes with us. We don't buy plastic wrapped snacks, but rather cut up cucumbers and apples at home to take along in lunch boxes. Which also leads to us having less trash that we need to get rid of, when we're out, because sometimes it's hard to find trash cans. And to be honest, I don't think they look particularly pretty, so I don't want to see them all around.

He already comments and asks, why people throw trash into the nature. So I hope he'll make more responsible choices in future.

How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Dorothea Sypien's avatar
    Dorothea Sypien 4/30/2024 12:39 AM
If we think about what we can do to help our planet, it is to shrink the greenhouse gas emisions. The production of meat, especially beef, produces a lot or carbon emissions.

I try to switch to chicken as often as possible. And also to eat smaller meat portions and instead add more vegetables and fruits to my diet. I also try to have at least one meatless day per week.

Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

My son goes to a physician education class once a week, where I need to take him. It's too far from home to just head back there, so in bad weather days I sit in the locker room and talk to other mums and crochet for honorary post.
Last time the sun was finally shining, so I took a long walk and discovered the nature of that area.
It was really peaceful and relaxing and getting some movement was healthy as well.
I hope we'll get more sunny days soon and maybe other mums will join me to discover the nature around us.

Climate + Air Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
How did it feel to intentionally declutter with putting things into the landfill? What did you learn along the way about yourself and our consumer and waste systems?

    Dorothea Sypien's avatar
    Dorothea Sypien 4/18/2024 12:26 AM
I've been decluttering my son's clothes lately. It's crazy, how much stuff accumulates as he grows.
I try to buy 2nd hand, if possible, though it gets harder as he grows, as children are rougher with their clothes and wear them a little longer.
So I try selling outgrown clothes on childrens markets and giving them to a 2nd hand store.
If I can't sell it and it's still good, I donate it to an organization in town.

It hurts to see how many people just give up and throw these things away. But I can relate that preparing them for further use is hard and tedious work. When working and caring for a child, this can easily be overwhelming. It's crazy what needs to be considered and taken care of, if you want to pass on kids clothes. It has to be the right season, absolutely spotless, washed of course, preferably ironed, right season, labelled, sorted by size and type, ....

I try to really intentionally buy his clothes, so he doesn't have too many.

Reflecting on the amount of clothes that he outgrows, I even started to buy my own clothes a lot more intentionally. I don't just buy a jacket I think is pretty. I'll only buy it, if I really need a jacket. And I hope to be a good example to my son, so he learns to be intentional and mindful when he grows up.

In an effort to live and eat healthier, I try to pack a snack / breakfast a often as possible in advance.
As I got quite some positive feedback during a break in a meeting today, I'm sharing my "Yumbox" with you.
I have one for my son as well (smaller of course) which he takes to Kindergarten every day.
I pack them in the evening and store them in the fridge and the food is really fresh next morning.
With the right tools it can be really easy to establish healthy habits and do something good for the environment.

Finally. A bit of sun brought out a lot of flowers, that I planted recently.

And looks like the red tulips are more of a pink then red.
Guess the orange and yellow ones need some more sun and warmth.

We have a strip in our garden which we tried to make a flower area for bees and other insects last year. That failed miserably and we had more blooming plants from weeds next to it than on that strip itself.

So we planted tulips and daffodils yesterday and even bought too many, so we started an additional area to be dedicated for flowers.

And we put up flower boxes in front of our house and filled them with bee friendly plants as well.
