Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Declutter My Home Without the LandfillHow did it feel to intentionally declutter with putting things into the landfill? What did you learn along the way about yourself and our consumer and waste systems?
Unaiza Santos 4/30/2024 3:56 AMI used to be a sentimental person, and as you would have guessed, I held on to my stuff for as long as I can. Until I heard from a homily that anything you haven't used in the last six months is no longer yours. The priest said it's best that you sell or give those items away for them to continue to serve their purpose. That became my anchor and eventually helped me to let go of stuff that's no longer serving me. Throughout this month, I learned not just about intentional decluttering, but also about not building up clutter in the first place. It really starts with a decision and an intentional mindset. It takes a strong will to say no to accumulating stuff that will eventually pile up in our landfills, or worse, in the ocean. :( With all the influence around us, it's easy to give in to consumerism but for the love of Mother Earth, we really need to make a firm stand to be mindful even of our littlest actions. I hope we can take the lessons from this month until after this challenge is over. Way to go, ecowarriors! <3 -
Unaiza Santos 4/26/2024 12:30 AMFinally completed this decluttering course and I love that it has a holistic approach. It did not just talk about decluttering stuff but actually avoiding clutter in the first place, in all areas of life. And it really begins with mindfulness/intentional living. I took a lot of notes and I hope to be able to apply the lessons beyond the Earth Month. :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINARWhat did you learn in the webinar? Did anything surprise you?
Unaiza Santos 4/25/2024 1:46 AMThe panelists shared beautiful insights on how they're contributing to protect our beloved planet. Of course, I'm proud that Emerson is taking this challenge seriously and it's really great to hear from our Chief Sustainability Officer himself, Mike Train! I really believe in the influence that leaders have in driving these initiatives. My favorite topic though is Brooke Tully's! I liked the tips she gave because I think they apply to any change we'd like to happen. Sharing them here for everyone's reference:- Make the request clear and specific.
- Demonstrate the desired behavior.
- Make it personal.
- Invite them to be part of something bigger.
- Empower and support.
- Have fun!
I also thought this is noteworthy:
Like what Brooke said, we just need to keep going and influence others by our example. :) Let's go, ecowarriors! <3-
Jude Christian Cervantes 4/26/2024 7:28 AMAwww, what a beautiful insight, Aiza! I wasn't able to attend the webinar since I have an early week long training, but from this post, it seems like I was also able to attend :) I like the ending statement as well, let's continue to influence others by being an example!

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and PaperBeyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?
Unaiza Santos 4/22/2024 11:31 PMWhen you want to experience calmness and soak in the beauty of nature, forests are among the best places to go to. It's just relaxing to see the trees, hear the sound of the birds and insects, smell the plants, and simply enjoy the greens and browns. Aside from beaches, forests and mountains are my favorites! So today I took time to learn about the Forest Stewardship Council. Good thing they have this dashboard (Microsoft Power BI) where we can see the list of FSC certified organizations.
And so, from this point forward, I'll be more conscious when buying stuff. I'll make sure to check for the labels and specifications to look for the FSC label. I'm glad that my favorite planner is FSC certified!
And also delighted to know that our baby wipes is FSC certified as well! Now I just have to make sure the rest of the products we're using also have the FSC label, or at least made by companies that are socially and environmentally responsible. Let's support those who do right so we can protect the environment one product at a time. :)-
Unaiza Santos 4/25/2024 1:48 AMThanks, Jude! Yep, more reasons to stay loyal to them. :) Let's keep supporting brands that are socially responsible and eco-lovers themselves. :) -
Jude Christian Cervantes 4/25/2024 12:02 AMNice! Good to hear your favorite products are FSC certified <3 Thanks for this information, Aiza! Super helpful <3

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Personal Waste AuditWhat are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?
Unaiza Santos 4/20/2024 7:43 PM
I just did a personal waste audit and here's my accumulated trash for the past two days. This is just mine and does not include trash from the rest of the household. It mostly contains tissue paper, food packaging, supplements packaging, and receipts.
Moving forward, I think I can do better in choosing food items with more sustainable packaging. As much as possible, choose bulk instead of individually packed items. As for the tissue usage, whenever possible, use a hand or face towel instead. And if it can't be helped, choose biodegradable ones.
We really need to exert a conscious effort every day to make sustainable choices everyday. It's not easy, but it's doable. Let our individual efforts create a ripple effect and hopefully soon enough, everyone will be on board in protecting the environment.-
Jude Christian Cervantes 4/23/2024 1:55 AMWow! I agree, you really need to be more conscious to make sustainable choices. Good job on tracking this Aiza! -

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Unaiza Santos 4/12/2024 3:33 AMUnfortunately, there's just a lot of plastic that we consume on a daily basis, especially water bottles. :( I've been seeing people buying water bottles at will just because it's more convenient. I hope we can all choose to do what is right for the environment and not just settle for what is easy. I will continue to do my part and hope that I can influence at least the people around me to be more mindful of our actions.-
Jude Christian Cervantes 4/17/2024 3:47 AMSad reality :( But not too late to influence others, let's go Aizamazing! :) -
Ryan Josue 4/14/2024 10:30 PMI also see this especially in places known for jogging. I've asked a friend before about it but they find it a hassle to bring a bottle while jogging and also not many places offer a dispenser to refill your bottles.
