Hayden's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Pick Up the Phone

I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues to make 3 phone calls to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 8 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Write Letters or Emails

I will gather a group of friends, family, neighbors or colleagues and write 1 letters or emails to public officials or companies to advocate for planet-friendly policies.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
How do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?

    Hayden Poole's avatar
    Hayden Poole 4/28/2024 5:56 PM
It affects the communities and health of the wildlife because me purchasing the items will let the companies know that I support their actions. By "Voting with my money" hopefully I can make a difference.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Pick Up the Phone
What do all of us have in common, regardless of politics, race, religion, occupation, or place we live? How can finding common ground help us as a society and as a species?

    Hayden Poole's avatar
    Hayden Poole 4/28/2024 5:54 PM
We're all human. We all have people we love in our lives that we want to protect. Finding common ground gives us a place to bond on and over as well as connect so that we can better hear each other out.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

    Hayden Poole's avatar
    Hayden Poole 4/28/2024 5:53 PM
I participated by asking friends for equipment to do work on before going out and buying brand new equipment. The main benefit was that it was actually a lot cheaper. A sharing economy could change the dynamic by improving everyones budget and relationships by having to interact with eachother when they wanna use the item.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

    Hayden Poole's avatar
    Hayden Poole 4/28/2024 5:52 PM
I learned about how a lot of the chemicals that go into the cleaner actually end up in the water and the environment and can cause serious damage to them. I did try making laundry soap with multiple ingredients but it didn't quite go to plan

Thanks for sharing. Because of this information I learned something new today!! (:
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
What did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?

    Hayden Poole's avatar
    Hayden Poole 4/28/2024 5:51 PM
I learned just how much plastic actually ends up in the ocean and how much the sea life suffers. It was sad. Sharing this with my sister was a big deal for her since she desperately loves animals, even if they don't look like a dog.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Leave No Trace
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

    Hayden Poole's avatar
    Hayden Poole 4/27/2024 2:06 PM
I care most about the wild life, I have always loved animals and would love to spend more of my life making theirs a better place.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

    Hayden Poole's avatar
    Hayden Poole 4/27/2024 2:04 PM
It definitely made me more aware of the surroundings as I had to watch people rather than myself. I like walking places as well as driving.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Write Letters or Emails
How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems - like plastic pollution - differently?

    Hayden Poole's avatar
    Hayden Poole 4/27/2024 2:03 PM
Thinking creatively will help us offer more solutions to everyone around us as well as create a safer environment for the generations that come after us. Thinking creatively can also help repurpose some of the pollution or waste into useable items.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

    Hayden Poole's avatar
    Hayden Poole 4/27/2024 2:02 PM
Something that has been challenging for me about committing to this is how often I crave foods that I didn't buy because I didn't NEED it. I learned that I have a lot more self control than I give myself credit for. Going forward I will try to continue with this challenge and think about what I need before what I want, it not only saves money, but is better for everyone.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Low Carbon Diet
Which high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?

    Hayden Poole's avatar
    Hayden Poole 4/27/2024 1:59 PM
I'm eating less beef, chocolate, and items with palm oil, and now eat more vegetables, fruits, and oats
