Avinash's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

Action Track: Community

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR

On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Diffusion of Innovation theory- No start is small or insignificant
It was a very nicely put together webinar . Mike was at his candid best especially when he answered the biodiversity question.
I particularly liked the part that brook delivered on diffusion of innovation theory and that no start is small or insignificant.
    Lot of learning.

Unusual Weather activity like excess rainfall and its correlation with Global Warming- We in Dubai experienced very heavy rainfall last week and a number of our friends and colleagues were affected.
I tried to find out from ChatGPT about possible correlation between the excessive rainfall and global warming.
This is what it came up with -
One significant consequence of global warming is the intensification of the water cycle, which can lead to changes in precipitation patterns, including unusually heavy rainfall events.
Here's how the correlation between unusually heavy rainfall and global warming typically works:
    1. Increased Evaporation: Warmer temperatures due to global warming lead to increased evaporation of water from the Earth's surface, including oceans, lakes, and soil.
    2. More Water Vapor: The increased evaporation results in more water vapor being present in the atmosphere. Warmer air can hold more moisture, so as temperatures rise, the atmosphere becomes loaded with more water vapor.
    3. Intensified Rainfall: When atmospheric conditions are conducive, such as the presence of a weather system or frontal boundaries, the excess moisture in the atmosphere can lead to intensified rainfall events. This can result in heavier downpours over shorter periods.
Overall, while no single weather event can be directly attributed to global warming, the trend of increasingly frequent and intense heavy rainfall events aligns with the expected consequences of a warming planet as outlined by climate science.

I guess this is stark reminder to double up the efforts towards conserving the ecology and make everyday an Earth Day.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Stay on the Ground
What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

    Avinash Naigaonkar's avatar
    Avinash Naigaonkar 4/23/2024 12:48 AM
It was easy to restructure as the timing favored it. I guess better approach to avoid airtravel will be to combine many meetings, activities sin one trip rather than make separate trips.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

Carried a backpack while going out on our holiday. Avoided taking single use bags from the vendors while purchasing food or fruits.

How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

we were on a holiday and took to walking instead of the taxi. It connects you with the community and you get to notice a lot of stuff that would have gone unnoticed. You also get an opportunity to stop and admire the city, its landmarks and people.

    Soulful eating today
In our culture, food is considered sacred . It is referred to as “Poornabrahma”. If you can cook only as much as you can consume, you respect the provider, the resources used and the person who helped to cook.

Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Avinash Naigaonkar's avatar
    Avinash Naigaonkar 4/02/2024 12:38 AM
From the summary, I realized that direct water consumption could be reduced by replacing current shower heads and faucets with more efficient ones.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Calculate My Carbon Impact
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Avinash Naigaonkar's avatar
    Avinash Naigaonkar 4/02/2024 12:30 AM
two major sources for my carbon footprint- one is not using public transport for daily travel and second is consuming food that is not produced locally in a good measure. Although being a vegetarian, I manage to avoid meat and processed food, since most of the food in UAE is imported, it adds to the carbon foot print.

Is there an end to Human Folly?
Whenever you see an ad for bottled water , you will always see claim that it is bottled at source at a mountain spring. The more exotic the name of the mountain, more is the price.

Last week, I was in McLeod Ganj India and took a hike to a pristine waterfall . You can see the picture below.

And what did I find at the top? Stalls an shops selling bottled water that must have come from a bottling plan hundreds of kilometers away , transported using trucks running on diesel and using mules in the last stretch ( pic below).

What a waste . As we all know these single use bottles are a major source of pollution all over.
I could not help but pity fellow humans for this folly. Ignoring the natural source of water for something that is damaging the environment and whose source of fame is that it is sourced form mountain springs like these.
