Laura's actions

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 20 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Carry My Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.

DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

The past few days I have been travelling and I have realized that it is much harder to make sure you are keeping up with your ecochallenge goals. For example, if you have to eat out no matter what it there are more limited choices. I have been mindful of the resources I am using and, if I don't finish something, sharing it with others.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Invest in Nature
What did you learn about how investing can support the environment and create a more sustainable world?

    Laura Mediavilla Redondo's avatar

I really wanted to dive into learning more about sustainable investing and which options there are. I learned that there are very specific resources, and you can even choose portfolios with ESG-compliant entities/ ESG-based goals.

What new insights did you gain about the skincare products you use? Did you reach out to advocate for refillable or recyclable packaging?

I think that is the only point in which I don't have the best: none of the packing if refillable (although it is recyclable!). I would love to see more refillable options within the mainstream skincare and makeup industry.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

I asked one of my friends for a stand mixer instead of buying one. I only wanted to use it for a very specific recipe and don't think I would be using one a lot. I believe that if we all share more, then we won't be buying things that will just sit unused in the closet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

    Laura Mediavilla Redondo's avatar
Laura Mediavilla Redondo 4/08/2024 7:33 PM
We use an enormous amount of plastic every day. I enjoy knowing that I am not producing more waste. Plus, I get extra steps when I walk to fill up my water bottle!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Weekly Meal Planning
How did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?

Laura Mediavilla Redondo 4/08/2024 7:30 PM
This challenge has motivated me to meal prep for the whole week. This way, I won't produce as much waste and I will have healthier meals.

I do the same. We only buy what we need for the week, this way we avoid unnecessary snacking and helps us lose weight.

How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

Being more conscious about the amount of water we use daily. Small actions every day can go a long way!
