Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 20 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Makenna Mall 4/15/2024 1:24 PMThis weekend I explored one of the new little beaches by my house. It was a great way to decompress and learn more about the local ecosystem. I find that most of the small beaches up my way have some level of tide pools that can be explored. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Makenna Mall 4/15/2024 1:17 PMMy family and I have a sharing economy that we use all the time. I am not much of a baker so rather than buying goods that would go bad in my house, I borrow from theirs whenever I need to make something. Similarly, I often have fermented projects (such as homemade kimchi) that they will borrow from me rather than buy. We also constantly share items such as yard equipment, skin care products, hair products, etc. to minimize waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil DisposalDid anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?
Makenna Mall 4/15/2024 1:12 PMIt turns out I barely use cooking oil, likely because I'm always worried about disposing of it incorrectly. It was interesting to learn about correct disposal procedures and to hear from some family members who store certain oils/ fats for reuse. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Makenna Mall 4/15/2024 1:11 PMI am really good about not using plastic bags but have noticed that some coffee shops since COVID do not allow for reusable coffee cups so I've had an uptick of using single use cups. I could ensure that I only go to shops that allow you to bring your own cup or can make coffee at home. For straws, I can begin carrying reusable straws in my purse again.
