Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Use public transportation

Instead of driving in a car to my vacation destination, I will use public available transportation.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

Action Track: Community

ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR

On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 100 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Forest-Friendly Foods

I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

During this month, I incorporated more plant-based meals into my daily routine. I learned how to prepare tofu instead of meat, experimenting with flavorful recipes that satisfy my cravings while significantly reducing my carbon footprint. When going to do my grocery shopping, I make a conscious effort to buy regional vegetables, selecting locally sourced produce that requires less energy for transportation and supports nearby farmers. This shift in my dietary habits not only benefits the environment but also promotes healthier eating choices for both myself and the planet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land + Forests Forest-Friendly Foods
What did you learn about forest-friendly foods? How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Karin Leiting's avatar
    Karin Leiting 4/26/2024 10:31 PM
As I start transitioning to a forest-friendly diet, I'm making conscious choices to remove palm oil from my kitchen, switching to alternatives like olive or coconut oil. I'm also being mindful of my coffee consumption, opting for certified sustainable options, and seeking out chocolate products bearing certifications like Fair Trade. It's a small step, but I believe in its impact.

Join me in the Eco Challenge, where every step I take isn't just for my physical and mental well-being but also for our environment. By incorporating running into my routine, I've found a way to make a meaningful impact. During my jogs, I deliberately choose routes that pass through areas littered with packaging waste, particularly from McDonald's products. As I run, I collect this waste, ensuring it doesn't further harm our planet. I make a point to pass by public waste bins along the way, responsibly disposing of what I've gathered. Together, let's turn each run into an opportunity to nurture both ourselves and the world around us.
