Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 2 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Endangered Species

Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 10 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 10 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 10 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 10 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 10 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Forest-Friendly Foods

I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Carry My Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 19

Green spaces, such as parks and gardens, are important. They absorb carbon dioxide and are associated with lower levels of air pollution.
Create your own green space. Add pot plants to your windowsill or balcony, and if you have your own outdoor space, don't replace the grass with paving or artificial turf.

By making small changes in our daily routines such as opting for car-sharing instead of owning a private vehicle or choosing a plant-based diet over meat consumption; reusing food scraps rather than throwing them away; avoiding chemical-based pesticides plus using renewable energy sources wherever possible - we all can play an active role in fostering a more ecologically balanced world.

Segregating waste is really simple. All you need to do is use two bins instead of one. All wet waste (food waste, soiled plain paper and anything biodegradable) goes into one. All dry waste into another.
    Simple act greater impact.

Absolutely! Segregating waste might seem like a small step, but its impact is monumental. By separating wet and dry waste, we're not just tidying up our surroundings; we're paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future. Every bit counts towards a healthier planet! 🌱 #GoGreen #Sustainability.

    Megha Gola 4/15/2024 3:07 AM
Waste audit helped me in understanding how to minimize their environmental impact, reduce costs, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Few tips I will follow to make small changes that are eco-friendly and will have a lasting effect on the environment.
    1. Use a reusable bottle/cup for beverages on-the-go
2.Use reusable grocery bags, and not just for groceries
3.Avoid single-use food and drink containers and utensils
4.Shop local farmers markets and buy in bulk to reduce packaging

Save paper and print out as little as possible. Use recycled paper for printers and notes. Set up your computer so that it switches to power-saving mode after just a few minutes of non-use. If you don't need it for a longer period of time, switch off the computer completely.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Megha Gola's avatar
    Megha Gola 4/13/2024 11:38 PM
Sustainable seafood is fish, shellfish, and seaweeds harvested or farmed in a manner that provides for today's needs while allowing species to reproduce, habitats to flourish, and productive ecosystems to be available for future generations.
However, in terms of per capita fish food supply, India is positioned 129th among 183 countries. Per capita fish consumption increased 81.43 percent, from 4.9 kg to 8.89 kg, with a 4.05 percent annual growth rate in the last 15 years. Among fish-eating populations, annual per capita consumption grew 66 percent.

Try rechargeable batteries instead of old-fashioned, single-use, alkaline batteries in devices like TV's remote control.

    • Amirtharaj Asaithambi's avatar

You're absolutely right! Switching to rechargeable batteries is a fantastic eco-friendly choice. Here's why:

      • Reduced Waste: One set of rechargeable batteries can replace hundreds of disposable batteries, significantly reducing landfill waste.
      • Cost-Effective: While the initial investment is higher, rechargeable batteries pay for themselves over time as you can reuse them many times.
      • Convenience: No more scrambling for new batteries when the remote dies! Just recharge your set and keep going.

      Bonus Tip:
Look for AA and AAA rechargeable batteries with a long lifespan and a good charger that can handle multiple batteries at once.

Thanks for sharing this eco-friendly tip! #EcoChallenge #RechargeAndReuse

Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

    Megha Gola's avatar
    Megha Gola 4/13/2024 12:27 AM
Cleaning products are one of the most common sources of pollutants in water systems, following microplastics, as chemicals from these products often get released directly into waterways. These pollutants can have drastic effects on water quality, contributing to everything from algal blooms and dead zones to increased bacterial growth and decreased oxygen levels.

Easy ways to conserve water at home include turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth or washing dishes, taking shorter showers, and watering your garden with a watering can instead of a hose.
