Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 3 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and OceansWhat did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?
Jaemee Lacaste 4/30/2024 6:02 AMFreshwater & oceans help sustain the life on Earth but both are experiencing significant challenges such as pollution, industrial waste, plastic pollution, etc. We as a community must help prioritize conservation efforts and reduce pollution and plastic waste in order to address these problems.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Jaemee Lacaste 4/30/2024 5:57 AMIts crazy how much plastic we consume on the daily, and how detrimental its effects to the environment. I've been using my resusable water bottles regularly whenever I go out for errands to keep myself hydrated during this extreme heat we're experiencing this summer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Weekly Meal PlanningHow did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?
Jaemee Lacaste 4/30/2024 5:53 AMIts feels good that I get to control my consumption habits for a more sustainable lifestyle. Seeing fewer/no leftovers also feels rewarding. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
Jaemee Lacaste 4/30/2024 5:50 AMThese days I like eating tofu instead of beef or any meat. This food has a significantly lower carbon footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Jaemee Lacaste 4/30/2024 5:47 AMI always bring my portable reusable bag with me so its not difficult at all. I just hae to make sure to have it in my bag at all times. This is useful when buying groceries, even when getting take out food, buying from shops, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Jaemee Lacaste 4/30/2024 5:46 AMThe act of picking up trash alone shows how much we care about our community!-

Very fulfilling to be able to participate in the coastal clean up last April 15! Our group picked up 500+ pieces of trash weighing more than 11 kilos! The area looked clean from afar, but unfortunately there are still small pieces of trash hiding under the sand, soil, and grass. This made me reflect on our household's plastic consumption and how we should really make an effort to lessen it.-
Jessa Gaceta 4/23/2024 9:02 AMSame here! I've had some reflections as well on how areas like this are very abundant in some places too but probably not well maintained as well. -
Jiemaica Ocampo 4/17/2024 7:40 AMAgree! Be the change you want to see in the world -

Jaemee Lacaste 4/11/2024 1:53 AMWAYS WE CAN SAVE WATER 💧- When doing laundry - reusing the same water used for our clothes to wash dirty rugs/floormats
- When showering - turning off the faucet when brushing teeth, turning off shower when not in use, reducing total shower time (30 minute showers use 100 gallons of water on average!)
- When flushing toilet - use a dual flush (this saves 67% of water compared to older toilet models)
- When washing dishes - instead of pre rinsing, scrape off excess food on plates into trash bin
