Dana's actions

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 1 hours in my community.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 120 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 3 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

When organizing a trip for 40+ people, travel logistics can be nerve wracking and the idea of overall carbon footprint can be worrisome. We always encourage our guide training students, instructors and returning guides to carpool. There are always a couple folks who want or need to drive on their own for various reasons. I'm pleased to say that most of our group did carpool to the training on the Deschutes this year, some as couples, friends, coworkers and others as complete strangers that happened to be on each other's route. I really appreciate those willing to make the extra effort!

Getting settled back in after a week on the river was not easy today and left me with little time or energy to jump back in here the way I would have liked to. I was disheartened when I watched a woman intentionally step around a large napkin floating down the sidewalk today but felt a bit better when another person smiled when they saw me go over and pick it up and put it in the trash bin just a few steps away. I'd like to believe there is hope for us as a species and that leading by example really can affect change.

It's happening everywhere around the world. For cleanliness government had given duty there to protects river and beaches.

Back from 7 days on the Deschutes River for our Whitewater Guide Training program. It was fantastic with a great group of students and return seasoned guides combined. We travelled 54 miles on the river over 7 days, slow moving with lots of teaching and learning. I am so happy to say that we were able to successfully separate and haul out all of our compost, recycling and landfill items when in the past most of those things would have all gone into the landfill at the end of the trip. Additionally we encouraged all our students to do a thorough micro-trash sweep of every campsite before getting on the river each day. Some were familiar with the idea, but not many. Looking forward to sleeping in my bed tonight, but absolutely loved sleeping under the spring stars the past 7 nights.

      Hoorah Dana!
So happy to hear this success story with safe journey.
Welcome home and if you've any left, would love to hear another before end of Eco-Challenge tomorrow . . .

Garbage pickup day is such a frustrating day! The litter I picked up along my street this evening was all from the things that fall out of the garbage truck and cans as the truck shakes and dumps the cans into it's bin. I don't know if folks aren't properly bagging their trash or if the dumping action is so vigorous the bags are breaking open.

Heard this same complaint from friend in Cashmere today. I always thought Waste Management had screen over the top when not actively picking it up (i.e. going down highway). They may not. Heard from Winton Compost via email today to be better about putting our bags in to avoid food waste all over the bins. Thanks for the frustration and picking up Dana! Good on you!
Proper management of collection tools - our end as consumers? or theirs as providers? Oh to have the time to be an auditor! I do know Waste Management has cameras on their truck from our tour last year to Spokane recycling . . .

I'm headed out for a week of rafting on the Deschutes River and will be offline 4/20-4/28. We'll be boating 54 miles. I wonder if that can count as muscle power commuting....Any thoughts?

Jeanne, I was so bummed to miss the Trashion Show and Earth Day Fair! Hopefully next year we can schedule our training so it does not conflict with two of my favorite events!

Claim it - it is 54 miles and 8 days muscle powered and not fossil fuels. I'll try to look into this and ask Lori since she is a Eco Challenge guru! Have a safe journey and I won't see you this year at Leavenworth Earth Day Fair :(

We walk our dogs up the Icicle Ridge trail frequently, to the 11th switchback. That is exactly the distance our sweet older pup, Sally, can do comfortably and happily without any flareups in her back hips. It was absolutely gorgeous today...although a little alarming that so many of our wildflowers are bursting out a month early.

I spent 6 hours yesterday working on our rafting property on the Chumstick, a very high fire risk area, doing a lot of fire wise prep work. It felt incredibly satisfying....and I was incredibly sore last night, Lol ;-)

I just figured out the "check-in" portion today. Is there any way to back and "check-in" for the 1st and 2nd?

Thank you Jeanne for the invitation to join this inspiring group and challenge! I rode my bike to and from work yesterday, one direction today and one direction tomorrow, but it's a start. Looking forward to being more active here and continuing good new habits beyond this month's challenge!
