Action Track: Community

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Use Public Transit

Public transportation reduces pollution, improves community, and creates safe streets. I will use public transit 5 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 23
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED

Freshwater + Oceans Low Water Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

    ELENA Ilyes's avatar
    ELENA Ilyes 4/23/2024 12:29 AM
In the Cluj area of Romania, water concerns primarily revolve around issues such as pollution, flooding, and access to clean water. Water pollution is a significant concern in Cluj, particularly due to industrial activities and inadequate waste management systems. The Someș River, which flows through Cluj-Napoca, has historically suffered from pollution due to industrial discharges and urban runoff. Efforts have been made to improve water quality, but pollution remains a pressing issue affecting both aquatic life and the health of the local population.

Community clean-up activities often leave participants with a deep sense of accomplishment and pride. These activities bring people together, often bridging gaps between different groups within the community. They offer a chance to meet new people or deepen existing relationships, enhancing your connection to the area. Seeing tangible results from communal efforts can lead to increased optimism about the community's future. It reinforces the idea that positive change is possible through collective action.

    Action Track: Community Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    ELENA Ilyes's avatar
    ELENA Ilyes 4/23/2024 12:22 AM
Planting trees offers numerous benefits that touch on mental, physical, and spiritual health. Studies suggest that spending time in nature, such as while planting or caring for trees, can enhance cognitive functions like focus, problem-solving, and creativity. Spending time outdoors to plant trees increases your exposure to fresh air, which is beneficial for your respiratory system. This exposure can also boost your vitamin D levels from sunlight, essential for bone health and immune function.

How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

    ELENA Ilyes's avatar
    ELENA Ilyes 4/23/2024 12:19 AM
The sharing economy is a socio-economic system built around sharing resources, including sharing access to goods, services, data, and talent. Sharing resources means costs are distributed among users, making services and goods more affordable for participants. By maximizing the use of existing resources, the sharing economy can reduce waste and decrease the demand for production of new goods, which is beneficial for the environment.

How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    ELENA Ilyes's avatar
    ELENA Ilyes 4/18/2024 12:13 AM
Cluj-Napoca, like many cities facing the challenges of climate change and urban growth, can adopt several strategies to enhance its water resilience in the face of changing water situations. These strategies include: 1. upgrading and maintaining existing water infrastructure to prevent leaks and reduce water loss; 2. implementing systems to collect and store rainwater can help reduce dependency on traditional water sources; 3. treating and recycling wastewater can provide a reliable water source for non-potable uses such as irrigation, industrial processes, and landscape maintenance, thus conserving fresh water.

    • Nicoleta Lupoaie's avatar
      Nicoleta Lupoaie 4/18/2024 12:16 AM
Preparing for changing water situations to enhance resilience can involve various measures at both regional and household levels. Here are some strategies:

      1. **Water Conservation**: Implementing water-saving measures such as fixing leaks, installing low-flow fixtures, and using water-efficient appliances can help conserve water resources.

      2. **Rainwater Harvesting**: Installing rain barrels or cisterns to collect rainwater for non-potable uses such as watering gardens, flushing toilets, or washing cars can reduce reliance on municipal water sources.

      3. **Greywater Recycling**: Recycling greywater from sources like showers, sinks, and washing machines for irrigation or toilet flushing can further reduce water consumption and lessen the burden on municipal water supplies.

      4. **Drought-Tolerant Landscaping**: Landscaping with native, drought-tolerant plants and using mulch to retain soil moisture can reduce outdoor water usage.

      5. **Water-Efficient Agriculture**: Implementing water-efficient irrigation techniques such as drip irrigation or using drought-resistant crop varieties can help agricultural operations adapt to changing water availability.

      6. **Water Infrastructure Upgrades**: Investing in water infrastructure upgrades, such as improving water distribution systems, upgrading wastewater treatment facilities, and implementing stormwater management measures, can enhance resilience to changing water conditions.

      7. **Education and Awareness**: Educating the community about water conservation practices, the importance of water stewardship, and ways to adapt to changing water situations can foster a culture of water efficiency and resilience.

      8. **Emergency Preparedness**: Developing emergency response plans and strategies to cope with water scarcity events, such as droughts or water supply disruptions, can help mitigate the impacts of water-related emergencies.

      9. **Policy and Governance**: Implementing policies and regulations to promote sustainable water management practices, protect water resources, and ensure equitable access to water can support long-term resilience efforts.

      10. **Collaboration and Partnerships**: Collaborating with stakeholders, including government agencies, community organizations, businesses, and academia, can foster innovative solutions and collective action to address water challenges and enhance resilience.

By adopting these strategies, both at the regional and household levels, communities can become more resilient in the face of changing water situations and ensure sustainable water management for future generations.

What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

    ELENA Ilyes's avatar
    ELENA Ilyes 4/18/2024 12:10 AM
Globally, we produce over 300 million tons of plastic annually, much of which is single-use, contributing significantly to environmental pollution, particularly in oceans. As actions to reduce plastic use we could switch to reusable alternatives like cloth bags, metal straws, and glass containers and also learn and follow local recycling rules to ensure proper processing
