Joel's actions
Climate + Air
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Joel Egyud 4/15/2024 7:24 AMI've really, REALLY wanted my own Cricut machine for a long time. This weekend, I had a friend cut a vector I sent to her into a stencil using materials she already had. She's more than happy to have her machine be a "Community Machine" and I encouraged her to come with pricing, so more friends feel inclined to use it - so many of us don't want to ask for free things and then we end up going about purchases on our own not to inconvenience people. -
Joel Egyud 4/07/2024 12:40 PMFound my protein drinks come in cardboard with a small, recyclable plastic lid. I had been using full plastic bottles. Wanting to get away from single use entirely but this is a good first step. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Joel Egyud 4/05/2024 6:03 AMOh, do I love my Poweraid bottles. They're so easy to pick up and go, especially when I'm ready to workout. I'm always sad when I look up powdered versions that they still don't have a sugar-free option. I've found an alternative that comes in single-use foil wrappers that are recyclable. I'm going to try these out in my own reusable bottles. Fingers crossed for a solution soon! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What results did you see? Please consider posting a photo of your cleanup!
Joel Egyud 4/04/2024 7:24 AMWhile not a cleanup effort, I helped fill sandbags in Millvale for community members to use to block their entryways. 8 large bags filled yesterday!-
Joel Egyud 4/04/2024 7:25 AMEdit: The bags were needed due to the flooding of Pine Creek and Girty's Run.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests 30 for 30 in NatureWhat have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?
Joel Egyud 4/04/2024 7:21 AMEven though its cold and raining, spending some time working on outdoor items at my house has elevated my mood!-
Claudia d'Aquin 4/04/2024 7:27 AMI have definitely found that it helps my body decompress from the workday and helps to create more memories with my little one and husband. I go for walks everyday with my little one and husband and it really makes you realize to appreciate nature and all its beauty. I also go along picking up trash to keep everything looking nice in the neighborhood.
