ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 25

ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

According to UN Diversity, 17+ million tons of plastic entered the ocean in 2021. Reducing plastic waste can save our ocean. I am encouraging everyone to reduce the use of plastic straws and help our planet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
What did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?

    Lee Calaguan's avatar
    Lee Calaguan 4/08/2024 2:56 AM
"Small islands can become uninhabitable due to sea level rise and lack of sufficient freshwater." When sharing this information with people in my life, the conversation that was impactful to me was the impact of climate change in the rising sea level and how it will affect our countries coastal communities.

The reality of climate change and its effects are becoming increasingly hard to ignore. One of the most alarming consequences is the rising sea levels, which pose a significant threat to small islands and coastal communities worldwide. When I first learned about the potential for small islands to become uninhabitable due to sea level rise and lack of sufficient freshwater, I was deeply moved. The thought of entire communities, rich in culture and history, being wiped off the map is devastating. In my conversations with friends and family, I’ve found that many people are unaware of the severity of this issue. It’s easy to dismiss climate change as a distant problem when its effects aren’t immediately visible in our daily lives. But for those living in coastal areas and small islands, the threat is very real and imminent. As we continue to grapple with the realities of climate change, it’s crucial that we keep these conversations going. We need to raise awareness, push for sustainable practices, and advocate for those most vulnerable to climate change’s effects. Remember, every action counts. Let’s work together to protect our planet and its inhabitants.

I am becoming more aware of the impact of single-use plastic in the environment. I am beginning to develop a conscious effort to provide alternative for my single-use plastic whenever I'm purchasing things.

Awareness is the start of being more intentional on how you see single use plastics and its effect to the environment
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Lee Calaguan's avatar
    Lee Calaguan 4/08/2024 2:46 AM
I usually use styro in my food purchase. I substituted them with my own container or a biodegradable/paper container.

I usually use environment-friendly bags or my little school bag to go shopping instead of one-use plastic bags.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Community ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
What did you learn in the webinar? Did anything surprise you?

    Lee Calaguan's avatar
    Lee Calaguan 4/04/2024 8:23 PM
I learn about the activities of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and on how I can support their initiatives. I also learn about how sustainable farming can affect the farmers' livelihood, the environment, and the food security in general. This direct purchasing of food from farmer to consumer lessens the cost and the environmental impact. I will surely share this information to my friends, and I will support sustainable farming as my personal action.

    Lee Calaguan 4/04/2024 8:17 PM
I will learn more about conserving biodiversity, particularly about the biodiversity in the Masungi Georeserve.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Lee Calaguan's avatar
    Lee Calaguan 4/04/2024 8:11 PM
I learn that I have to be conscious of buying seafoods that are high in mercury because they affect not only the environment but also health.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-Free
Where did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?

    Lee Calaguan's avatar
    Lee Calaguan 4/04/2024 8:07 PM
I use the drinking fountain with glass instead of buying water with PET bottle.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
How did it feel to intentionally declutter with putting things into the landfill? What did you learn along the way about yourself and our consumer and waste systems?

    Lee Calaguan's avatar
    Lee Calaguan 4/04/2024 8:05 PM
Decluttering makes my home clean and organized. I am now more conscious on buying things that might be clutters in the long run.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Consume only Needs vs Wants
Consuming only what we need vs. what we want can be really hard to do. What has been challenging about committing to this action for a month? What have you learned about yourself? Will you change any habits going forward?

    Lee Calaguan 4/04/2024 8:00 PM
Adopting the Need vs. Want approach is a challenge. This would really entail a change in my personal paradigm.
