I really learned a lot from the challenge! I will be mulching closer to Mother's Day weekend. Very excited to start composting!

Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now? What was the most challenging part of reducing refined sugar, and how did you overcome it?

Because sugar is in so many foods consume, I'm getting better at reading labels and trying my best to eat whole foods with natural ingredients. A work in progress for sure!

In thinking about mulching, we have a new house. What is the positives or negatives to colored mulch? Would appreciate any insight!

Colored mulch introduces dyes into your soil, undermining the health of the soil (and the small residents like worms, nematodes, centipedes, etc. which are greatly responsible for that health). It really is a human aesthetic that harms the growth of your trees, shrubs and flowering plants.

Basic, uncolored hardwood mulch is by far the better choice. The uncolored mulch will retain the moisture, and also decompose and support the health of your soil and your plants.

    Soil and Food
What did you decide to grow, and how did it feel to start (or care for) your plants? What connections did it give you to soil or food resilience?

I grew Cuban Oregano in a pot this month! I am going to make a chutney with it :-)

That's one I have not utilized before, I grow Thai, Sweet and Chocolate basil so will take a look at Cuban to see how I can use it in my cooking!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    What is resilience?
What personal strengths or supports helped you adapt to a past challenge? How might those same strengths help you in the future?

Reaching out to others and getting a let up in support. Let others provide guidance and structure even if you don't immediately see how it will work out. It will work out, sometimes it just takes time to grow.

Today I connected with a coworker that had been affected by the recent tornados. It was really nice to get unadulterated time with her to really ask how she is and genuinely listen!

How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet? What fruits or vegetables did you try this week, and which was your favorite?

Eating vegetarian helps in consuming more fruits and vegetables! Currently my favorite fruit are the Cara Cara oranges. For snacking my favorite is the crunchy edamame.

Really exciting to connect with other like-minded people on my unit! We are going to collaborate on future green advocate initiatives. Very fun!
