Checked out Fruition Seeds in Naples, New York. They sell a lot of seeds that are regionally adapted and work best in our Finger Lakes climate. I got some potato seed and am excited to cut those up and try planting!

This was year 1 of pulling highly invasive garlic mustard on my property, and this was only part of what we pulled in 2021. The seed bank can be 7+ years and each plant can release THOUSANDS of seeds. Back at it this year again.

Peppermint and some ivy is in different areas in my yard. As long as its not overly invasive, we let it go as it smells nice and they flower for the majority of the season.

Met a coworker today for lunch and discussed composting, winter sown native plants, invasive species, etc. We also talked about Furball Farm Cat Sanctuary, which has nothing to do with this challenge, but they are an amazing place, so it's worth mentioning :-)

Land + Forests Personal Waste Audit
What are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?

Thought I was going to crush this challenge with zero waste, but realized I used the tea bags in the pantry... Hmm I love free tea, but should I start brewing looseleaf and home and bringing it in??

That's still quite an accomplishment!!! I don't think I would do very well on that challenge, but I bet it gets you to thinking of alternatives. Great job.

Asked Corning City of Public Works to remove invasive trees off their approved city tree list. They don't know how to change the list and were not consulted with the list.

Land + Forests Explore My Area
Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

I frequently walk around my work campus (Sullivan Park). Lots of pretty areas to explore. It helps me relax and reconnect with what's really important to me.

I've been planting native plants and flowers for the last couple of years. This past weekend, we planted a few more. I have a ton of winter sown seedlings currently-- hopefully most survive and we will be extremely busy transplanting. All native.

    Freshwater + Oceans Dishwasher Efficiency
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Michelle Wallen 4/19/2024 10:22 AM
We are currently setting up a rain garden to make use of water run-off. We also need to start a water capture system (rain barrel or something) but haven't done this yet. We are also trying to divert water that comes down from the hill away from the house and towards our flower gardens. Trying to divert water is quite challenging! It wants to go where it wants to go!

Land + Forests 30 for 30 in Nature
What have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?

Going outside is major for my mental health. I love puttering around in the garden and checking every five minutes to see if my peas have sprouted yet :)

I love fresh from the garden peas~ one of these years we are going to have a garden, but we just aren't set up for it right now. The deer are enjoying the heck out of our native plants and flowers- I"m sure they would love some veggies too.... which is why we haven't done a garden yet!

Land + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and Me
What did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?

    Emilee Lindner's avatar
    Emilee Lindner 4/17/2024 7:59 AM
I learned that "no-till" is an excellent way for soil to retain its health. Regenerative agriculture is a must for our food production going forward. These facts speak for themselves and scare me: "Food production has altered our planet more than any other human activity. It accounts for 24% of greenhouse emissions and 70% of all freshwater usage; it is perhaps the single greatest cause of biodiversity loss."
